MOROTO: The return of rainfall in Karamoja sub region in the Northeastern Uganda has lifted up the hopes of the Karimojong pastoralists in the region. The three day continuous heavy rains that some parts of the region have received so far has pleased the pastoralist who had fears of drought affecting their animals.
The severe drought that had hit the region for closely to six months had created panic among the Karimojong pastoralists in the Northeastern Uganda with many of them afraid of losing their livestock.

Draught had also forced hundreds of Turkana pastoralists to crossover to Uganda in search of water and pastures for their animals. The situation was made worse after Katakwi and Kapelebyong districts had banned Karimojong herders from crossing into their places.
Timothy Lokwang one of the Karimojong pastoralists says he had lost 5 heads of cattle to draught in Napak and that he was left with 5 cows that were also at the verge of dying as a result of lack of water and pasture.
“I lost my livestock because of draught now I pray that if this rain could continue so that the five of my remaining cows can survive,” he said.
Peter Lote another pastoralist says the seasonal rivers that had dried up due to the previous drought are now full.
Mario Tengei the retired senior production officer Nakapiripirit district said the return of the rains was normal and advised the farmers to utilize it.
