The National Resistance movement (NRM) has in today’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting held at State house decided to open the race for speakership which is highly being contested by Kamuli woman member of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga and Omoro county legislator Jacob Oulanyah.
Kadaga who has been in parliament since 1989 seeks to extend her tenure at the helm of the legislature to 15 years centrally to what Oulanyah was allegedly promised to him in 2016 in the runner up to the speakership elections by the same CEC which is headed by the president also the party chairperson Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Jacob Oulanyah claims he was convinced to stand down for Kadaga in 2016 to make 10 years as speaker since her predecessor now vice president Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi also served 10 years. To his surprise the iron lady from Kamuli is not subscribing to that promise anymore and this has stirred mixed reactions, counter accusations in the corridors of power.
The race is braced by other candidates from other parties including Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) outspoken spokesperson and Kiira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda and Democratic party’s Richard Ssebamala and Oulanyah’s tight buddy and Kyotera woman MP Juliet Kinyamatama.

Now according to the NRM’s apex body, the party hasn’t endorsed any candidate as expected but all candidates will be vetted and the NRM caucus will most likely choose who will carry the party’s flag for speakership which sounds to be a huge blow to Jacob Oulanyah whose needed wish was in the CEC endorsement.
