For the better part of the past three weeks, National Unity Platform has been embroiled in a heated wave of accusations against their Deputy President for Buganda and former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga over a service award he got from parliament.

The party convened a National Executive Committee meeting last week chaired by Deputy President Lina Zedriga as acting president, they resolved to task Mpuuga put in writing a satisfying explanation surrounding the circumstances under which he and three other commissioners of parliament shared a whooping Shs1.7billion amongst themselves.

“In light of this, NEC has resolved to recall Hon Mathias Mpuuga from the Parliamentary Commission on account of corruption, dishonesty and abuse of office and to notify Parliament of the same”-the statement reads in part

Mpuuga was tasked also to explain why he should be recalled as commissioner of parliament. He was given seven (7) days to reply. According to another notice issued by the party this afternoon, Mpuuga put in writing but his explanation was not that satisfying.

Zedriga who convened another National Executive Committee meeting today resolved to recall Mpuuga as the Commissioner of parliament a position which the party seconded him to last year in December when it dropped him as the Leader of Opposition and replaced him with Nakawa West legislator Joel Ssenyonyi.

The party has also nominated Francis Zaake Butebi the controversial Mityana Municipality Legislator to replace Mpuuga at the parliamentary Commissioner. Zaake was a commissioner of parliament but was booted by parliament in a motion and majority vote for demeaning Speaker Anita Among.

Zaake would later run to court to overturn the removal from the commission and indeed the constitutional court ruled in his favor but parliament and the Attorney General appealed the ruling and the Court of Appeal is yet to give a judgement on the same.

“NEC further resolved to nominated Hon Francis Zaake Butebi as Parliamentary Commissioner. His nomination was informed by the fact that he was illegally removed from the role in March 2022…”the statement reads in part

Zaake in the December NUP reshuffles was appointed Deputy Opposition Chief Whip but his appointment was in January this year rejected by Speaker Anita Among on account that the position does not exist in the structure of opposition leadership in parliament.

National Unity Platform is headed for a tough legal battle to drag Mpuuga out of the parliamentary commission since on the onset, the party only has powers to appoint him and has not powers to remove him as the process for removal of a commissioner of parliament is well stipulated in the rules of procedure.
