In the news this morning, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) repelled a would be deadly attack by the Al-Shabaab Terrorists in the Southern Parts of Somalia, reports indicate just as security teams prepare for another round of operations in the Southern States of Jubaland.

This second phase of operations against the Al-Qaeda linked terror ground were scheduled to kick off in the two states some months back but the process was put on hold due to a logistical nightmare for the local troops who are set to take over security responsibilities from the foreign soldiers working under African Transition Mission In Somalia.

According to reports, the no nonsense UPDF contingent managed to successfully thwart an Al-Shabaab attack on Kismayo Road Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Barawe Lower Shabelle recovering several weapons from the militants.

The Battle group 38 Commander, Col. Christopher Berochan emphasized the need for sustained vigilance against Al-Shabaab and other illegal groups. The militants have been targeting military camps since they can not fight on battlefields.

The foiled attack underscores ATMIS commitment to regional security. he said. The UPDF team is part of the ATMIS contingent tasked with the protection of civilians besides battling and wiping out Al-Shabaab militants in the Horn of Africa nation.

Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Burundi all contribute troops to Somalia under ATMIS but are set to completely withdraw from the country by the end of 2024. already 5000 soldiers have been withdrawn from the country and an additional 4000 soldiers will also set to withdraw in June this year under the ongoing implementation of the Somali Transition Plan (STP)

UPDF has been in Somalia in the fierce battle against the Al-Shabaab since 2007 under the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and now under the African Transition Mission In Somalia (ATMIS). Despite several successes, UPDF has also suffered immense losses of lives the recent one being in May last year when the militants raided over a UPDF base in Somalia killing over 50 and taking several as captives.
