It was a moment of joy and happiness as former National Social Security Fund (NSSF) boss Chandi Jamwa walked out of the cold gates of Luzira prison where he had been incarcerated since January 15th 2018.

Jamwa was convicted to 12 years after the Anti-Corruption court found him guilty of causing financial loss to the NSSF after selling government bonds held by the fund before their maturity date to the defunct Crane Bank at a price below their value in 2007. From the sale, NSSF got Shs36billion instead of an expected Shs39billion from the bonds.

He had served 6 years and 3 days out of the 12 years when president Museveni pardoned him and gave him a second chance in Exercise of the power vested into him under article 121 (1) of the constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995 as amended and on advice of the advisory committee on the prerogative of mercy.

Jamwa was pardoned alongside other nice convicts who were serving difference sentences but majority for defilement. The others of the list include Ntale Vincent who was serving four and half years, Drabo Nelson (20 years sentence), Omirambe James (6 years sentence), Alama Samuel, Leku Francis, Kabila Joseph (all serving 3 years), Yoha Ayitia (4 years sentence), Kato Fred (7 years sentence), Okello Zakaria (5 years sentence), Nono Joseph (5 years sentence), Ouma Mesach (7 years sentence) all for defilement and Owino Jackson who was serving 6 years for manslaughter.

The former NSSF boss thanked President Museveni and his establishment for his mercy and ending his nightmare in the cold gates of Luzira.

“Am very grateful to the president Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa for his magnanimity, his benevolence, his kindness, sympathy and mercy and am head over heels ecstatic is the right word and we continue thanking him and thanking his establishment for ending my nightmare”-a visibly happy Jamwa told Media
