Ugandans in July 2018 went to the lines to vote for their respective chairpersons for Local Council One (LC1) and Local Council (2) and Women Councils. This happened after over10 years when such elections are not held.
Unlike for the general elections where it’s through a secret ballot, the last LC elections by lining up behind preferred candidates, Electoral Commission said it didn’t have money to carry on secret ballot method.
However, owing to the expiry of their term in July last year 2023, government through Minister of Local Government Raphaël Magyezi extended the term of office of the LC Chairpersons citing financial constraints and the extended term is set to expire on Saturday this week 6th January 2023.

It was later revealed government had earmarked and electoral commission was in preparations to unveil the program for the Lc1 elections but it all remained on paper as the reality has now unfolded again.
According to a December 29th Gazette notice seen by this publication signed by ministers Betty Amongi and Rapheal Magyezi, the term of office of the LC Chairpersons and women councils has been extended for another 6 months. The gazette notice didn’t reveal the reasons behind this move but cabinet on December 18th resolved to extend the term of office of the chairpersons.
Those who were gearing up to contest in the LC elections will have to wait for another 6 months to contest and get the tools of power from the incumbents whom most of them have held the offices for over 15 years.
