On 15th this month, we reported how a top Museveni supporter had written to the Minister of Justice and Constitutional affairs Norbert Mao and the Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka to effect amendments to the Bank of Uganda Act article 21 such that Museveni’s face can be printed on the country’s currency.

A one Majambere sighted economic growth and stability during Museveni’s that as the reasons to have his face on the currency as a gift of appreciation. This caused mixed reactions with some supporting the move while others objecting to it insisting laws can’t be changed to benefit one person.

Well, this has been done before and the term limits were removed in 2005 purposely to enable president Museveni ride on his seat until he gets tired. When he was almost 75 years, another battle was staged in parliament in 2017 to remove Article 105 of the country’s constitution regarding the age limit that would have barred him from occupying state house any more.

Therefore, without doubt this too would pass and the president’s face will appear on the currency either by hook or by crook since NRM has the numbers in parliament to have anything of their interest make it to the floor of parliament and eventually passed and signed into law by the fountain of honor.

As we write this, a city law farm known as GMK bridge associates has joined the struggle to push for the amendments to the Bank of Uganda act 2000 particularly article 21 that prohibits the bank from printing a face or portrait of a living person onto the country’s currency.

The now contentious article states that “21. Design of bank notes. The bank shall determine the design of the bank notes issued by it, but no bank note shall bear in its design a portrait of a living person or any political symbol or word”.

In a letter seen by this publication addressed to the speaker of parliament, GMK associates also site the same reasons like the one’s of Majambere, they want this to be some kind of honor and reward to president Museveni given what he has done since the 60s and his now 37 years as president of the republic of Uganda.

“We want this to act as a way to honor our leader the president who is the icon of this stable and transformed economy of Uganda. The Revolutionary leader who led the movement to end the post-colonial conflicts and rule of terror in this country. And he has gone on to become the nation’s longest serving leader and so much deserving to be called The father of the nation”-reads part of their letter.

These further claim that having Museveni’s portrait on the country’s currency will spur continuity and carry on Museveni’s legacy to another generation. In this they list countries that have portraits of their former leaders on their currencies and further say this has played a vital role.

“We have studied the history of other countries that have kept the legay and vision of such charismatic and revolutionary leaders like President Yoweri K Museveni and discovered that their currencies have played a vital role. A case in point South African rand with the portrait of Nelson Mandela, The Indian Rupee, The Malaysian Rinngit, The Braziian Real, The Mexican Pesso, The Argentine Pesso, The Nigerian Naira, The US Dollar, The British pound among other world currencies.”-their statement further reads

Their push comes at a time when the country is facing economic hardships with the public debt now amounting to UGX86 Trillion and now a year with out the Governor Bank of Uganda since the longest serving BoU boss died almost a year ago.

We wait to see how far this will go to make it a reality. In the comment sections, tell us what you think about the move to amend the laws of the land such that Museveni’s portrait can be printed on the country’s currency by the bank of Uganda.
