MOROTO: Over 400 patients have undergone specialized eyes operations at a medical camp held at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital. The free operation in the newly constructed Shs1.2billion facility by sight savors its currently on going and conducted by a team of Ugandan doctors led by Dr. Glades Atto.
Dr Atto speaking to this publication earlier this week said all the operations have been successful adding they will continue doing it daily depending on the availability of the patients.

She further explains that Cataract is a medical condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque and subsequently resulting in blurred vision
says it is one of the the major causes of blindness in humans, which is largely caused by ageing.
“Cataracts is so common in Karamoja especially among the elderly persons,” said Dr Atto.
Matine Odongo one of the Patients who had gone for screening says the establishment of the fully fledged unit for eye care was a great relief for the people of Karamoja and the neighboring districts.
Martine say the only place they would get eye treatment was in Tororo a distance of 280kilometers away from Moroto.
“It has not been easy for us to access these services because of the distance but we are happy that we are now getting it from Moroto,”Odongo says
While Jackson Lokut another patient appealed to government especially the ministry of health to make eye lenses to be available in the unit so that they don’t go far to access them. Grace Angolere and Clementine Nakut are some of the hundreds who have regained their sight after going through the operations.
Dr. Steven Pande the Moroto regional referral Hospital Director says the establishment of the first eye unit in the hospital has been of great significance to their eye-care and treatment services.
According to Dr Pande, the facility is fully equipped with modern equipment and other medical supplies from their partner Sight Savors.
“This facility costed about Shs1.2billion including the machines and it has wards for admitting male and female patients after the surgery for close monitoring, “says Dr Pande
Peter Sidong Sagambi the Deputy Chief administrative officer Moroto said the facility was a relief to people of Karamoja and the entire country and appealed the hospital management to make the proper use of the facility.
While Sentongo Musobozi the program officer Sight Savors Uganda said the choice of constructing a multi-billion eye facility in Moroto for entire Karamoja was after discovering that Karamoja region has higher cases of Cataracts and trachea related diseases.
She says the sight savers team move around the communities and do screen and that those who require surgeries are transported to the facility.
