News making rounds in Uganda indicate one of Uganda’s oldest political parties the Uganda People’s Conngress (UPC) has opted out the presidential race in the 2021 general elections. The party which is headquartered at Uganda house has been marred with tensions following a fall out with former party president and 2011 presidential candidate Dr Olala Otunnu.
Recently late Milton Obot’es Son Jimmy Akena who has been representing Lira Municipality which was elevated to City status in parliament since 2006 was re-elected as the party president after defying a court order that had intended to stop the delegates conference early last month.
While addressing the media Addressing journalists at the party headquarters on Wednesday, Sharon Oyat Arach, the party spokesperson said that their only would be candidate, Jimmy Akena, changed his minds and will be standing for a Parliamentary seat of Lira East instead.
UPC has for long been rumored to have engaged in a mutual political understanding with Museveni’s NRM party and his wife has been serving in government since 2016 from Lands ministry to Minister in charge of Kampala. This could be seen as one way of giving way to the old man from Rwakitura to extend his dominance on the country’s top job to 40 years. The announcement comes at the backdrop of a heated verbal exchange of UPC and Bobi wine’s Party NUP over color RED and later to party sloga of ‘Every where’.
According to Electoral Commission as of Monday 24th August 2020, 58 people had already picked presidential nomination forms.
