The National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) has said it is mooting a plan to have all Ugandans present their old national IDs before being issued new ones during the forthcoming mass enrollment.
The registrations body is set enroll Ugandans for new National IDs with new features including DNA but all this yet to be approved. Having done the mass enrollment and registration in 2014, the current National IDs will be expiring starting this year hence the need for mass renewal.

Addressing journalists in Kampala, NIRA spokesperson Osbone Mushabe says they are mooting a proposal that before issuing the New IDs, Ugandans will have to present the old one and if one is found without an old ID, will have to pay Shs50,000 to get the new one.
Mushabe says that record have indicated that a number of Ugandans have either lost, misplaced or used their national IDs as security to acquire loans from money lenders and have not bothered to get them back or replace them.
