Amongi who has a rich history of land grabbing and fraudulent acquisition of property for some time is reportedly demanding compensation before being evicted as court ordered. In 2018 during the Commission of Inquiry set up by president Museveni, Amongi then minister of Lands faced the Bamugemereire commission where her fraudulent deals were uncovered.

According to the Commission, Amongi used her influence as minister of lands and through her company Amobet to acquire property in Kololo and in other parts of Kampala. She also championed payouts from the Uganda Land Fund to people without following the procedure but in a syndicated mode where the same ended up landing into her own hands.

According to facts available in Lira City where Amongi plans to contest after fearing defeat in the poverty stricken district of Oyam in her Oyam South which she has represented since 2001 reveal how she acquired the land in 2005 after conniving with two people.

It’s said that in 2005, Amongi purchased land from Fred Okaka, the brother of Lillian Akullu and Hon Sam Engola. The sale was approved by Hon Sam Engola who signed as the family head, confirming the equal division of the land between Fred Okaka and Lilian Akulu.

That Amongi went ahead and constructed her house and lived on this peace of land from 2005 upto now but 2007 when Lilian Akullu returned from London, found her land sold without her consent and disputed her brother’s actions and initiated the process of titling the entire land including the portion sold to Betty Among.

In 2005, Hon. Betty Amongi purchased land from Mr. Fred Okaka, the brother of Lillian Akullu and Hon. Sam Engola. The sale was approved by Hon. Sam Engola, who signed as the family head, confirming the equal division of the land between Fred Okaka and Lillian Akullu.

Both parties were considered tenants on public land as the lease offer from Lira District Land board had expired. Family meetings chaired by Sam Engola attempted to resolve the matter, but compensation proposals were unsuccessful Betty Among insisted on compensation citing the family dispute over inheritance.

The case entered the court system with Sam Engola testifying that the land belonged to their mother and the portion sold by his brother. The yesterday 22nd January 2024 court ruling determined that the following;

The brother of Sam Engola, Fred Okaka was merely a caretaker of the land to his sister and sold land that didn’t belong to him, that The Land belonged to their sister Lillian Akullo and not their mother as earlier said, that Minister Betty Among should be evicted from the land. Court also ordered that Fred Okaka must repay all the money to Betty Amongi, a cost of Shs10million is awarded to Lilian Akullo with the responsible party for the payment not specified by the court.
