Yesterday 31st December 2023, Ugandans were shocked upon hearing the news of Kenyan-born Ugandan Athlete Edward Kiplagat alias Benjamin whose body was found lifeless in the driver’s seat in a car in Eldoret’s Kimumu Estate with knife stabs on the neck.
World Athletics has led the world in mourning former World Junior 3,000m steeplechase silver Medalist Edward Kiplagat who has flown the Ugandan Flag high in the sport of Athletics.

Moiben sub-county police commander in Eldoret Stephen Okal said on Sunday that the body of the athlete was found with injuries on the neck. Okal has today confirmed that two suspects have been arrested.
According to Okal, the main suspects in the murder of Kiplagat included a boda-boda rider and another person. He further says the two have been tormenting residents in the area for long.
We have the two suspects in custody and they have been positively identified”-said Okal.
The police commander also says the motive of the killing appeared to be a criminal incident and that a mobile phone and money were stolen from the athlete
“We have cast our net wide as we go on with the investigations to arrest anyone else involved”-he further says.
Kiplagat won the 2008 World Junior 3,000m steeplechase Silver medal at 8:19:24 behind Kenyan Jonathan Ndiku Muia with 9:17:28 and Kenyan Kipyegon Terer settling for bronze in 8:25:14.
He has represented Uganda in many world events as well as the continental championships. He flew the Ugandan flag at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi coming 4th in the 3,000 steeplechase. He was also part of the 2011 World Championships team in Daegu, South Korea finishing the 10th and 2012 Olympic Games reaching the semi-finals.
He won a bronze medal at the Africa Championships in Porto Novo in Benin in 2012. He missed chance at the Beijing World Championships after losing in the heats.
