Bukedea district which Speaker Anita Among represents in parliament as their Women Member of parliament is holding two by-elections for the LC5 Chairperson after the one voted in 2021 died last year.
The vacancy for District Chairperson, Bukedea District, occurred as a result of the death of the former Chairperson, Moses Olemukan on 17th December 2022, while the vacancy of the District Directly-elected Councilor occurred due to the resignation of the elected Councilor.
Three candidates were nominated for the LC5 polls and these included Akol Mary on the NRM ticket, Lokwiisk Tychicus Ebukalin (Independent) and Oita Sam Odeke (Forum for Democratic Change – FDC).

As usual both NRM and FDC pitched camp in Bukedea to traverse support for their candidates, Museveni didn’t go there to drum support for the NRM candidate because he’s currently under self- isolation at Nakasero State lodge after testing positive for Covid-19.
However, as polls opened today, polling agents and other observers were shocked to find ballot boxes already filled to the brim as early a 7:30am pre-ticked in favor of the NRM candidate something that has elicited mixed reactions with many asking why a big party like NRM engages in ballot stuffing with all the resources, military and favors on their side.
FDC Withdraws from race
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has since withdrawn their candidate mid-way as elections were still on-going. In a letter signed by FDC president Patrick Oboi Amuriat seen by this publication, they decided to withdraw their candidate because of electoral fraud which they witnessed with their two eyes.
“Our intelligence sources, point to the fact that majority of these fraudulent ballot papers were pre-ticked from several schools around Bukedea and Bukedea Central police station on the night of 13th June 2023”- reads part of the FDC press release.
Commenting on the issues of electoral fraud, the Electoral Commission spokesperson Paul Bukenya advised all parties with complaints to lodge their issues with the EC complaints desk.
