AMUDAT: The rate at which government funded projects especially constructions are poorly done in Karamoja is worrying. On Saturday this website published an article about the cracked Shs700m police station in Alakas border post in Amudat sub county in Amudat district.
Well, after the story going viral, this website has learnt that the contractor who did the work, called one of the engineers employed by Development Initiative for Northern Uganda (DINU) which funded the structure but the engineer is said to have assured the contractor never to be shaken because he was overall boss.
Immediately, the resident district commissioner Amudat Major Betty Akello visited the site, after reading the story and she found out a serious mess before she ordering the engineer who did shoddy work to correct the cracks.

Just within two days concerned residents led this website to another multimillion office structure and residential houses for immigration officers in Alakas border post in Amudat sub-county in Amudat district which are at the verge of collapsing even before its handed over to the immigration.
Although the amount of money was not availed for this project but sources within ministry of works said it’s about 600m.
This website could not meet any worker at the site although they are signs of a contractor trying to correct the cracks.
Our efforts to get a comment from the contractor on what could have caused the structures to develop cracks were futile since their mobile phones were not readily available.
Moses Lokol one of the residents in Amudat town council says some contractors connive with government engineers to defend shoddy works.
“We have buildings here in Amudat that have not even lasted two years without collapsing but the engineers because they eat together with the contractor, they play a big role in protecting the contractor on the shoddy work”-Lokol says
John Lopuko another concerned resident says most contractors don’t work with local community who have knowledge about the soil texture in Karamoja.
“Most of these contractors are from out side Karamoja, and they get a contract in Karamoja, come on full board including their askaris from Kampala and mess up the work”-Lopuko says.
