Museveni Orders Police To Probe Karamoja ‘Mabaati’ Scavengers

This is the fourth week that the ‘Mabaati’ scandal is rocking the headlines in Uganda. Several ministers enjoyed knowingly shared iron sheets meant for the Karamoja people in the pretext of requesting for them while others like speaker Anita Among and Minister Matia Kasaija blatantly said they never requested for the iron sheets.

Some ministers like Amos Lugoloobi was caught red handed with OPM branded iron sheets on his goats/cows house back home in Ntenjeru in Kayunga district. The other minister who sparked off the ‘Mabaati’ discussion is Goreti Kitutu for Karamoja affairs who confessed to have diverted 3000 iron sheets to her constituency and birth place in Namisindwa but apologized and asked for a second chance.

It was Museveni’s State House Anti-corruption unit which blew the lid off the scandal after arresting Minister Kitutu’s mother, nephew and brother when they were nabbed with OPM branded iron sheets at home.

Despite the State house anti-corruption unit, Parliament’s Presidential affairs committee and the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) taking keep interest in the matter with calls from legislators and the general public for Museveni to dump all the minister implicated in the iron sheets scandal, police has revealed they have joined the investigation on orders of president Museveni.

Speaking to the media today at police headquarters Nagulu, Fred Enanga the force’s mouth piece revealed that president Museveni directed for an expeditious inquiry into the mabaati scandal and other relief items meant for the Karamoja region.

According to the police spox, the Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Francis Abodo using her constitutional affairs has directed the CID to work with the State House Anti Corruption Unit to expeditiously conduct a criminal investigation into the matter.

Among the ministers implicated in the Mabaati scandal is 2nd Deputy prime minister and woman MP for Kamuli district Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Speaker Anita Among, Minister Matia Kasaija, Minister Agnes Nanduutu, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Minister Bwino Fred Kyakulaga, Government Chief Whip Denis Obua, Minister Amos Lugoloobi, Minister Goreti Kitutu, Minister Judith Nabakooba among others.

“As you are all aware, H.E. The president has directed for an expeditious inquiry into allegations of theft of iron sheets and other relief items, that were meant for Karamoja region, following increased complaints from the intended beneficiaries and other concerned citizens”- reads part of Enanga’s statement.
