The Shs12bn project was launched at Hotel Africana in Moroto and attended by cultural leaders both from Karamoja and Acholi and political leaders. The funds which are channeled through Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development will be implemented by partners including UNFPA.
Development partners implement programmes through the Government of Uganda. Judiciary officials were also present.
Justine Tuko the deputy RDC Moroto district says that Gender based violence against women and Children was really increasing and that Karamoja was on top.
According to Tuko the perpetrators of Gender based violence always walk scot free in the region faulting the judicial system for being lenient to suspects accused of violating the rights of women and children.
“I would like to request our judiciary at least sometimes close one eye and decline to give bond to suspects accused of defiling children and raping women’-she appealed
The state minister for Gender and Social development in charge of children Sarah Mateke also pointed out that most of the cases have died in the hands of the Director of public Prosecutions (DPP) adding that they were organizing for a meeting with DPP over the same.
“Files are sent to DPP’s office and they die from there, what we only get to know is that the file is closed and this is disgusting imagine your own young child has been raped, defiled but the suspect is walking freely”-she revealed
