Following the death of his father and mother in fatal accident in Budaka along the Tirinyi- Mbale highway on 19th December 2022, late Samuel Okabe’s son has emerged victorious in the by-elections held on Thursday 23rd February 20222.
During his burial, several political shots came out to show support for Okabe’s son, among these were Vice president Jesca Alupo, Deputy president Thomas Tayebwa and speaker Anita Among.

He joined the race against NRM’s backed Oucor Philip whom Dr Tanga Odoi, Rciard Todwong and president Museveni actively conversed support for till the last day. The other candidates were Alliance for National Transformation and former FDC iron lady Alice Alaso, Ongurucco Martin (independent and FDC’s Eratu Emmanuel.
Following a highly contested poll, the Returning officer of Serere district Sylvia Nangendo Cheptegei has declared late Okabe’s son Omoding Emmanuel as the winner of the by-election with 15638 votes followed by NRM’s Oucor Philip who polled 13206 votes, ANT’s Alice Alaso garnered 3335 votes, Ongurucco Martin (independent) 2523 votes and FDC’s Eratu Emmanuel came limping with 1252 votes.
The trend seems to be a new political trend where children and relatives of the deceased have merged victorious to replace their late parents in parliament, Florence Andiru Nebanda replaced her sister Serina Nebanda who died in 2012, Baroda Kayanga replaced her mother Rehema Watongola who died in 2020, Andrew Ojok Oulanyah replaced his father Jacob Oulanyah who was speaker of parliament and died in March 2021 among others.
