General Elly Tumwine died today aged 68 years from a Nairobi hospital. A dark cloud hangs above his family and his friends and colleagues whom he served with in the army which he was set to retire from later this year.
Tumwine who’s the former Security Minister is to have fired the first bullet at Kabamba Military Barracks in the early 1980s that sparked off a 5 year bush war that ushered in the now 36 years Museveni government.

According to President Museveni who paid tribute to his fallen General via his Twitter handles says Tumwine who was once his student at Burunga primary school after his A level before heading to University says the fallen General joined FRONASA with 9000 others.
He joined FRONASA with 9000 others in 1979, went to Monduli Military School in Tanzania and was the one who fired the first shot on the 6th February 1981, at Kabamba, at the beginning of the 1981-1986 war of Resistance.

Museveni says Tumwine was a dedicated servant and hero in every capacity he served in the NRM government. The president alludes this to the positions he held as Army commander, member of the high command, Director General of Intelligence and his latest as Minister of Security.
Since that time, Gen. Tumwiine has been part of the leadership of the NRA- UPDF as well as serving the government in various capacities.
