TOP STORY: Scramble For Oulanyah’s Replacement Rocks Parliament

There’s brewing tensions at parliament as the battle for the replacement of late Jacob Oulanyah gears up since the position fell vacant and legislators are supposed to hold elections of the speaker for continuity of parliamentary continuity.

Many legislators have already started doing underground campaigns ahead of the expected voting of the speaker on the 29th of March 2022. President Museveni has since summoned the NRM MPs to discuss on the puzzle of the next speaker.

Notable names rumored to be interested in the position is Deputy Speaker Anita Among who has shared 72 parliamentary sittings when her boss was away for the entire period he’s been in charge. Inside sources also suggest that she is going to be endorsed by the NRM caucus on Thursday.

The other person on the list is Thomas Tayebwa the Government Chief Whip who initially had interest in the Deputy Speakership but was convinced by Museveni to stay down for Anita Among who won with a landslide in Kololo.

Bugweri county legislator Abudu Katuntu, Rwemiyaga county legislator Theodore Sekikubo who also interested himself in the Deputy speaker position is also hooting to replace the late Jacob Oulanyah.

The former speaker of parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is also rumored to be on the list but after resigning from her position as 1st Deputy Premier and Minister of East African Affairs.

Opposition is still quiet on whether they will back NRM’s endorsed candidate or they will front a candidate. Kira municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda lost miserably against Kadaga and Oulanyah but he is still mum on whether is joining the race too. He however says NRM should have their speaker but Deputy speakership should come from opposition since they also have the best candidates who are well versed with the laws.
