TOP STORY: Muhoozi Keinerugaba’s Retirement From The Army Draws Mixed Reactions

Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba

Today afternoon news made headlines of how Museveni’s son and Commander land forces of the UPDF an institution he has served for almost 28 years has finally retired. It’s all written on the walls that Muhoozi didn’t retire from the army to concentrate on personal businesses but t focus his eyes on the country’s top job.

It’s no longer a secret that Muhoozi through his crusaders championed by city promoter Balaam Barugahara is intending to be president of this country an idea that was hatched years ago when former Intelligence Chief Gen David Sejjusa blew the lid off the plan in what he termed as THE MUHOOZI PROJECT 9 years ago.

Muhoozi’s retirement from the army now draws the debate of Museveni’s succession plan which has always seen many conclude that the old man from Rwakitula will be president of Uganda until God says NO. Tibuhaburwa who’s now 78 years old has been president of Uganda since 1986 when he ceased power from minister Okello Oryem’s late father Tito Okello after a five year guerilla war in the jungles of Luwero.

However, many have reacted differently on Muhoozi’s retirement as they welcome him to the line of politics which he has been having interest in despite being a serving army officer. Well, we are not sure if the UPDf’s Commissions and Promotions Board has already discharged him but Muhoozi threatened to resign from the army on 9th October 2021 as he agitated for improvement in the welfare of the soldiers but political pundits said it was an excuse for him to officially join politics.

Muhoozi who previously served as the commander of Museveni’s elite force the SFC, started military training in 1994 after he left high school but later officially joined the army in 1999 and has grown through the ranks though many have questioned how his father has promoted him too fast unlike other officers who are promoted once in 5 or 10 years.

For example, he was promoted to the rank of Major Gen in May 2016 after the presidential elections and in just three years he was again promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General the second highest in the Army ranks in Uganda. Will his retirement from the army and with his eyes on the 2026 elections put an end to Museveni’s highest desire for the country’s top seat just convinced by the son to bow out?

As the army processes his retirement successfully, we wait to see what’s his next step.
