An ardent people power supporter identified as Hillary Sseguya has dragged President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo and AIGP Asan Kasingye to court for blocking him on Twitter.
Through his brother Hassan Male Mabirizi, Seguya contends that he was blocked after engaging the three government officials on several occasions which they didn’t welcome, despite the fact that they opened up these platforms to get the views of the public.
“The decision/actions of the three officials infringes on the applicants right of freedom of speech, expression, thought, conscience and belief guaranteed under Article 29 of the Uganda constitution,” he argues.
Seguya, a student pursuing a Master’s degree in International Relations at Harvard University, is hoping for a ruling reminiscent of that that was recently made against US President Donald Trump.
In May this year, a three-judge panel unanimously decided to uphold a lower court’s 2018 decision that by blocking people on his account, President Trump violated the First Amendment of the country’s constitution, which prohibits government discrimination against a person’s free speech based on their viewpoint.
Trump late last week appealed against this ruling.
The blocked Sseguya also through his Lawyer Male Mabirizi also seeks compensation for inconveniences caused on him and infringing on his right of speech.
