President Museveni retained Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama as the Chairperson Electoral Commission. He also retained Hajjat Aisha Lubega as the vice chairperson of the commission. Additionally he also retained one commissioner but sent home the other four. The president nominated four new commissioners who are set to be vetted by parliament next week.

Opposition has punched holes into Museveni’s new commissioners since they are known NRM cadres. For example, Robert Kasule Ssebunya, Stephen Tashobya and Okello Anthony are former MPs on the NRM ticket and their fairness in organizing a free and fair election remains at stake in the coming election.

President Museveni, Bobi Wine, Nathan Nandala Mafabi have already declared to be part of the 2026 general elections as presidential candidates though nothing has since changed especially in regards to the much needed electoral reforms.

As 2026 draws closer, political parties have started organizing for the show down to counter Museveni who is seeking to extend his grip to power to 45 years. They’re also other candidates who are normally sponsored by Museveni in proxy format just to spice up the game.

Now opposition parties are factions from existing parties have worked out a coalition that will counter Museveni and believe it can bring down Museveni’s four decade rule and usher in new leadership in government.

Dubbed the Forum for Uganda National Democratic Alliance (FUNDA), the coalition brings together the Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform, FDC Katonga Faction led by Dr Kiiza Besigye, DP Block an offcut from Mao’s Democratic Party, the UPC faction led by Counsel Peter Walubiri with Olala Otunu and Mugisha Muntu’s Alliance for National Transformation (ANT).

Sources privy to this development have told this website that the coalition is now set to be launched soon after all back door meetings finalizing on the key elements of the coalition that will make it a strong force to reckon with ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Inside sources now reveal that the coalition will have NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine as the joint opposition bearer while Dr Kizza Besigye will be the leader of the coalition as it’s patron. Mathias Mpuuga, Gen Mugisha Muntu, Proscovia Salaam Musumba and Betty Aol Ochan will be vice presidents for Central, Western, Eastern and Northern respectively.

Further, Erias Lukwago will be the Chairperson of the Coalition, UPC’s Olala Otunu as the Secretary General while DP’s Dr Lulume Bayiga will be the treasurer. David Lewis Rubongoya is the proposed Deputy Treasurer while the new leader of opposition in parliament Joel Ssenyonyi will be coalition’s Secretary for mobilization.

Many times alliances and coalitions have been made but end up splitting due to infiltration by the regime crusaders and end up not achieving their intended purposes but only a conduit to get donor funding. From the Interparty Coalition in 2011 that fronted Besigye as the opposition joint candidate to the Democratic Alliance which was snatched away by Mbabazi who used money to buy off all the parties in it and now the newly formed coalition of FUNDA.

We are reliably informed that the FUNDA coalition is now set to convene it’s first press conference which will take place at Besigye’s Katonga road office. This will be attended by Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform, Mugisha Muntu’s Alliance for National Transformation and Uganda People’s Congress of Olala Otunu and Peter Walubiri. The presser will happen on Tuesday and source have told this publication that the principals of the coalition are set to introduce it officially to Ugandans and their supporters.

If not infiltrated by money, intrigue, betrayal and hypocrisy, this new formation will give Museveni a run for his money since many of the people in it are good at mobilization especially Dr Kiiza Besigye.
