INSIDE POLITICS: What Besigye Was Seen Doing In Kenya Today

Today 3rd December, a section of politicians in Kenya mostly aligned to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) headed by the Azimio principal Raila Amollo Odinga (RAO) converged at the Menyenya primary school grounds in Borabu constituency in Nyamira county for the final send off of former legislator for Mugirango constituency Benson Kegoro.


The former legislator Benson Kegoro died last month on 16th November 2023 and has been laid to rest today. Among the top dignataries present was former Kakamega governor Wycliff Oparanya NARC leader and Azimio ally Martha Karua, Nyamira governor Hon Amos Nyaribo, Kisii governor Simba Arati, MPS Patrick Osero, Josh Nyamoko, Steve Mogaka among others.

The other notable leaders present were Kenya’s opposition heavy weight Baba Raila Amollo Odinga, Uganda’s opposition heavy weight and four time presidential candidate Dr Kiiza Besigye  who all converged to condole with the family especially Lawyer George Kegoro.

Mzee Benson trained as a teacher and worked in many schools in his backyard of Nyamira county but would later venture into politics. In 1970, he won a by-election in West Mugirango constituency after the death of his mentor George Morara.

He lost in 1974 but later regained the same seat in 1979. Kegoro lost the same seat again in 1983 something which force him to run for the directorship of a tea factory which he won by a landslide. His obsession for politics didn’t stop, he would later serve as a councilor in Bosamaro Ward, becoming the first politician to server as a councilor, tea director and civic leader. He lost his councillorship in2007.

In 2016, opposition kingpin Raila Odinga who is a close family friend of Kegoro attend his wife’s funeral at Nyaronde in Borabu where he reminisced about old memories. Former president Uhuru Kenyatta was also his ally and always mentioned him when he met with Gusii leaders.
