The Federal Republic Of Somalia has been admitted as the Eighth member of the East African Community today Friday 24th 2023. It’s almost a year since Democratic Republic of Congo was admitted into the bloc on 29th March 2022.
Somalia’s admission into the bloc was approved by the region’s leaders during the 23rd Ordinary Summit of the heads of state held in Arusha, Tanzania today after a year of scrutiny, negotiations that ended successfully.

Speaking on behalf of the EAC heads of state, the bloc’s outgoing chairperson also Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye said the heads of state agreed to formally admit Somalia into the East African Community bloc after the closed door meeting which lasted more than five hours.

Mogadishu, a war torn country first expressed interest in joining the EAC in 2012, but was turned down due to it’s internal troubles with the Al-Shabaab insurgents and lack of a stable legal and political environment at the time. However, her hopes of joining the regional bloc were rekindled when equally troubled South Sudan was admitted in 2016 and later DRC which also suffers the same sickness of endless wars with it’s boarders got admitted in 2022.
Speaking at the summit today, Somalian President Hassan Mohamud said the admission is a line of hope and opportunities for the people of Somalia who will gain much from the regional integration. Which has now eight members which include Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC and now the new entrant Somalia.
