Multimillion Solar Borehole initiative Donated By Statehouse Vandalized In Napak District

The woes of water shortage are not only spoken about in Karamoja but experienced as the natives search for water going as far as Teso and Acoli regions.

This trying reality contrasts the realization that government has made efforts to provide a water source and instead of it being maintained it’s vandalized.

At Lokapel a multimillion Solar powered borehole stands with three out of 7 solar panels missing. Furthermore the water systems has been tampered with and pipes are broken. It looks like a criminal job undertaken by a technical person.

In the community, the locals point to the other pipes that were broken by warriors. But a closer look it’s noted what they are talking about are the pipes running water to the tap stand in Lokapel. They do not know that the pipes at the pump are also broken. Though they are aware that the solar panels were stolen. Meanwhile the community continue to trek distances in search for water and there is no mention of the fact that their is a solar powered water point which still has at least 4 solar panels and could be fixed if the community advocated for it and also ensured the criminals are apprehended.

Watching water resource wasting away in a water stressed area rouses fear for any such investment being put in the region without a high level security system in place to prevent vandalism.
