Over 150 Homeless Zombo Residents Cry For Help

ZOMBO: Over 150 dispossessed residents of Labora Village, Otheko Parish, Paidha Sub county in Zombo district whose houses were inflamed by the enraged community members of Avonu from Amei Parish, Paidha Subcounty have called for government and a humanitarian support.

The homeless residents who lost houses in a retaliation by the pissed community of Avonu on alleged accusations of deliberately murdering their two dumb relatives along river Zingili on claims of a goat theft have been camped temporarily in Pubidhi Primary school, Nebbi Muncipality.

The killings of the two dumb Jacob Odongo 23 ,and his friend Charles 18 , grossly led to the massive destruction and looting of many property like food crops, animals among others.

The living conditions of these evacuees have worsened as they are hit hard by hunger,lack of clothes and poor shelter conditions in the camp.

A Mother who wept while giving speech said taking their children back to school has become difficult as Schools have opened. He said all the uniforms and scholastic materials of their children are all destroyed.

She asked for financial aid from the government and Samaritans to help them send their children back to school.

Mary Okecha 52years old revealed that five of her goats were looted though she was witnessing and offering rescue support was difficulty due to the readiness of the vexed Avonu community members .

Ronald Jagen 39 complimented the security from both Zombo and Nebbi district for bringing the volatile situation into calm but cried for humanitarian assistance.

“l don have any thing to eat, all our clothes and everything got burnt in the houses. The government tried their part to protect us but how are we going to take back these kids back to school?” asked Jagen.

Patrick Anyolitho 62, appealed to the government for compensation since they have lost many property that they couldn’t document yet.

“Is there any way we can be compensated? We have lost so many property.” asked Anyolitho.

During the recent visit by Zombo district authorities to the bereaved Avonu community members in Amei Parish ,Paidha Sub county, the LC3 Chairperson Hon.William Okethi said he had forwarded the matter to the office of the state Minister Nothern Uganda awaiting for responses.

The Zombo district Police Commander ASP Nelson Nahabwe warned residents in the area against violating laws which he noted accelerated the incident.

Zombo District Resident Commissioner Rtd Lt Col.Pius Alitema with his counterpart from Nebbi District Robert Abak assured the Community  of Avonu of guaranteed safety and security.

According to an Assessment report on the incident by Community Empowerment For Rural Development CEFORD -Ug ,an NGO in Zombo district, about 196 people including children were left desolated after 76 houses were set ablaze by the apoplectic Avonu community.
