JUST IN: Mixed Reactions As Bobi Wine Suggests Museveni Would Be In Jail Over Corruption In His Gov’t

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

There’s a mix up of comments and tweets on Bobi Wine’s tweet where he suggests president Museveni would be in jail if indeed he means what he always says about fighting corruption from his government.

Over years, many Key Museveni officials, ministers have been engulfed in many corruption scandals which have costed the country trillions of shillings and majority of these walk scot free and only the juniors are fished.

Despite putting in place courts, anti-corruption units like the Inspectorate of government (IGG) and the state house Anti-Corruption Unit among others. At one time in 2019, president Museveni and other officials in government held the Anti-corruption walk from City square to Kololo, officials continue to grow the appetite of embezzlement.

Despite all these efforts, corruption continues to eat up Museveni’s government in sectors like police, passport office, the army, Office of the prime minister and many others which continue to grapple with loss of funds due to corruption.

The president has always issued orders that many see as aiming at watering down the efforts in fighting corruption. For, example the president one time ordered IGG Betty Kamya not to go into lifestyle audits of several government officials. Recently he ordered IGG not to have Army bosses declare their wealth.

The former IGG Irene Mulyagonja at some point said the reasons why corruption continues to eat up the country is because most corrupt people hide behind president museveni and they come out to be untouchables.

Key among the known scandals include the global fund (gavi) where the then minister of health and now security minister Jim Muhwezi was charged for embezzling billions of money meant for Children’s vaccines and HIV/AIDs, TB programs in 2007.

In 2013, the then MP for Soroti Municipality and NRM’s national vice chairperson was sent to Luzira prisons for embezzling millions which were part of the Gavi funds. It was said that while serving as state minister for health (General Duties), Mukula allegedly requisitioned and signed for Shs263m on behalf of the first Lady, Janet Museveni which money was part of the GAVI( Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation) donated to Uganda for Children infected with HIV/AIDs, malaria and tuberculosis.

If we start naming all the corruption scandals where key Museveni henchmen are involved, we may finish next week. Currently the Office of the Prime minister is drowned in a corruption scandal where several ministers shared iron sheets meant for the vulnerable Karimojongs. Three Ministers Goreti Kitutu Cabinet minister for Karamoja affairs, amos Lugoloobi state minister for Planning and Agnes Nanduutu state minister for Karamoja affairs have been arrested and remanded over the same.

Nanduutu is currently in Luzira prisons on remand and her bail hearing at the high court will come up on 3rd May 2023. Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) have said more ministers will be charged over the Mabaati scandal.

‘Our big problem now is corrupt gov’t officials . This is what is slowing down our rate of growth. Those people must go to jail and they must lose opportunities of leadership, but they must pay back everything they have stolen”- said president Museveni as quoted by Daily Monitor.

Replying to this tweet, Bobi Wine who is the principal of National Unity Platform says if president Museveni was meaning what he says in the fight against corruption, even himself (museveni) would be in jail. His tweet has elicited mixed reaction the anti-Museveni tweeps siding with Bobi’s suggestion and the pro-Museveni tweeps casting their anger against the man from Magere.
