It is true. When politics becomes completely devoid of principles, ethics and morality, the governors and leaders show disdain towards those they govern and lead, become shameless and arrogant, and begin to think, believe and hold the conviction that they can do anything under the Sun without fear that sooner than later they will have to account for their excesses.
Currently in Uganda the Karamoja iron sheet issue has shown us what kind of governance and leadership Uganda has, and that if we expect the governors and leaders to guide us through the complex 21st Century, we are deceiving ourselves.
Virtually all the top leadership of the country was involved in the looting of the iron sheets bought for Karamoja on taxpayers expense.
Question: What does the president do when a collective shameful act is committed by those he selected to lead the country before his own eyes?
Obviously where there are no principles, ethics and morality in governance and leadership, governors and leaders will not offer to resign to preserve the character of the nation.
What are the citizens expected to do when governors and leaders shamelessly loot what is genuinely for the public? Respect and respectability are important elements in governance and leadership but over time they have receded to the lowest ebb in Uganda to the detriment of everyone.
It requires leadership and good governance to restore these virtues. Who will provide the necessary quality leadership and good governance at the centre of which must be respect and respectability? Future generations are being denied respect and respectability in governance and leadership.
The young are learning from the current governors and leaders how to behave if they become governors and leaders in future. The country will have no character be a use it will have no leaders and governors of integrity and honesty.
