As the economic strains continue biting Ugandans, with the price of commodity products going high every other day yet incomes and salaries remain the same, what every employee would wish for is having their salaries enhanced to match the economic hardships.
It’s what Uganda’s parliament had always done whenever such times come and the same was reported few days ago when parliament was still in recess. One of Uganda’s diaries reported that president Museveni had blocked a plan by legislators to increase their salaries.
According to the reports, President Museveni rejected a proposal by members of parliament to have their pay and pension contribution increased after the legislators on September 7th passed the Parliamentary Pensions (Amendment) Bill 2022 in which they voted to increase the member’s contribution from 15 to 20%.
In a letter dated October 13th to Speaker Anita Among, the president indicated that he declined to assent to the bill after he was advised by the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development that the Bill presented to them for assesment of it’s financial implication did not include amendments to increase their contribution to the government fund from 30% to 40%.
However in a twist of events, as she opened plenary today, Speaker Anita Among has denied such reports and termed them misleading aimed at creating unnecessary backlash against the legislators and the house which she leads.
