Oulanya’s death set a new precedence and constitutional crisis which the framers of the 1995 constitution never saw. According to Article 82, his death meant parliament can’t do any business when the position of speakership is vacant.
This is the reason why the NRM party quickly organized nomination of those interested in replacing the fallen Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, the race attracted big name politicians in the NRM and the party’s apex body chaired by the president zeroed on Anita Among to keep the status quo that the deputy Speaker ascends to speakership.
Upon hearing the news that their favorite was the party’s favorite, Hon Anita Among’s camp celebrated in total excitement and later the Deputy Speaker would later issue a statement thanking NRM CEC for picking her among the many as it’s flag bearer in the elections set for Friday 25th March presided over by the Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny Dollo.
The Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament who crossed from the Forum for Democratic Change has been raising through the ranks of the National Resistance Movement as a party and she has received unwavering support. She garnered over 400 votes during her election to Deputy speakership, she beat Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nserereko who got 24 Votes and FDC’s Yusuf Nsibambi who managed to collect 35 votes.
Being a money bag of the sort, she has been able to solicit support from with in the NRM and the opposition despite the shortcomings and her growing grasp to the laws of the house.
“In the same vein I also extend my appreciation to the Members of Parliament of the NRM Caucus for their unwavering support and indeed, the entire Parliament of Uganda fraternity for their overwhelming support thus far”-Reads part of Anita Among’s Statement.
With humility and a contrite heart I would Like to extend my sincere gratitude to our Party Leader, His Excellency General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni; and, the distinguished Men and Women of the Central Executive Committee of the NRM Party for their vote of confidence.
