Following the death of Hon Jacob Oulanyah which left the position of speaker of parliament vacant and parliament wouldn’t transact any business when the position is vacant, Members of parliament today convened a special sitting presided over by the chief justice Alphonse Owiny Dollo and voted for a new speaker.
The race had only two candidates, Bukedea Women representative Anita Among Annet who is NRM’s candidate and Bugiri municipality member of parliament Hon Asuman Basalirwa who was the opposition’s joint candidate.
After elections, vote counting has been done and Anita Among took the day with 401 votes and Asuman Basalirwa garnered 66 votes.
Anita Among now replaces her boss with immediate effect and is set to preside over the election of deputy speaker of parliament in just few minutes from now.
