News we are getting from Entebbe indicate that the NRM party’s top body Central Executive Committe has finally zeroed on one candidate for speakership of the parliament of Uganda to replace the late Jacob Oulanyah who died on Sunday 20th.
Several people showed interest to seek for speakership and according to a document released by NRM’s electoral Commision boss Tanga Odoi, they were 13 legislators who wanted to replace Oulanyah. Of these three were ministers including health minister Jane Ruth Aceng, Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi, State Minister for Defence also member of parliament for West Budama Jacob Oboth Oboth. Both Kafuuzi and Aceng withdrew from the race.
After thorough vetting and discussions, the party has zeroed to Bukedea Women representative Anita Among Annet who has been serving as Deputy Speaker under Jacob Oulanyah. She will now faceoff with other candidates from the opposition and those who may wish to stand as independents from the NRM.
The NRM caucus sits tomorrow to stamp CEC’s decision and voting of the new Speaker will take place on Friday 25th March 2022 at Kololo ceremonial grounds according to a notice released by the clerk to parliament yesterday.
More details to follow.
