Following Museveni’s ban on Social media as the country heads to polls tomorrow, Ugandans including those running government pages have resorted to Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to stay online.
While addressing the country yesterday, President Yoweri Tibuhaburwa castigated Facebook for randomly suspending accounts of Pro-Museveni bloggers like Ashburg Kato, Full Figure, Isma, Bajjo among others. This angered the old man from Rwakitura to direct Uganda Communications Commission to shut down social media platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter until further notice.
However, the ban seems to be yielding nothing since Ugandans have kept online leaving Tibuhaburwa with no other option since the social media shutdown was expected because the same was done during the 2016 general elections.
However in the twist of events, Ugandans have embarked on trolling several government agencies which have continued to use the banned platforms communicating to Ugandans. According to Netizens government agencies have also resorted to VPN to remain active on both Facebook and Twitter.
MTN Uganda tested the wrath of angry Ugandans today while it announced their move to block social media on the directives of government. Later, Government of Uganda used Twitter to announce that tomorrow 14th and Friday 15th have been declared public holidays. Uganda Police is also still using facebook.
Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo was also asked what he’s doing on a banned platform when he posted using his Twitter handle while at Kyambogo grounds which has been gazette as the National Tally centre
