MOGADISHU: Reports from Somalia suggest that the Al-Qaeda linked terrorist group Al-Shabaab carried out an attack on an ATMIS (African Union Transition Mission In Somalia) military base Bulo Mareer primary staffed by Ugandan forces. The scale and intensity of the battle are reportedly significant although causalities and injuries are not yet known.

This comes at the backdrop of a deadly attack that happened in May this year that left over 50 Ugandan soldiers dead. In the past attack, the president Museveni blamed it on cowardice and some officers have since been charged and dismissed from the army.
ATMIS is a peace keeping mission in Somalia which came out of AMISOM which is contributed by several countries like Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea among others. The force has been a sharp target of the terrorist group and several soldiers have lost lives.
Bulo Mareer lies over 120km South of the capital Mogadishu. It’s not yet known how many soldiers were injured or lost lives in last night’s attack the second deadly one in the lower Shabelle Region this year. The army back in Uganda is still tight-lipped about the incident.
