In a very decisive move which has elicited excitement and hope ahead of the 2026 general elections, Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng has gone through as the Chairperson of the NRM party in Lira City.

The City Woman Member of parliament who had faced still competition from business man Geoffrey Etwop was declared unopposed in the district and city level elections held at Ambala primary school.

In the same vein, John Ocol also went through unopposed as the vice chairperson while Dr. Morish Ongom also went through unopposed as the district General Secretary for Lira City ahead of the General elections.

The only heated race was for the Publicity Secretary where Jacob Ocen defeated journalist Joseph Ekol marking a signficant reshuffle in Lira City’s NRM’s leadership.

Business man Geofrey Etwop has faced hostility from his own party members in Lira City who blocked him from accessing party accounts accusing him of supporting opposition politicians like Betty Amongi while opposing NRM’s Jane Ruth Aceng.

Etwop and Presidential Advisor Francis Okello Opio, also known as Dano Abor, are being criticized for backing UPC’s Betty Amongi Akena, the Minister of Gender, who has declared her interest in contesting against NRM’s Dr. Jane Aceng Ocero, the Minister of Health and Lira City Woman MP.

NRM supporters described Etwop’s actions as a betrayal and called for his immediate removal. They also demanded that he be blocked from accessing the party’s account. George Okot, the lead petitioner, described Etwop as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” accusing him of consistently supporting opposition candidates while using his NRM position for personal gain.
