Details have emerged how Oyam South MP and Gender Minister Betty Amongi Akena plans to abandon the rehabilitation of a bridge at a swamp connecting Lira City East and West Divisions.
Amongi who recently packed all her luggage and is currently residing in Lira city amidst serious outcry of her poor performance over the decades she served as MP from Apac and Oyam respectively, recently announced the plan to rehabilitate the bridge but there are already evidence of proof that she has failed to undertake the project to its completion.
Over a week ago, Amongi while distributing hand hoes to few selected UPC supporters in Omito Ward, Lira City West, committed herself to rehabilitate the bridge located in the same area, a purport to show people that she is ready to work for the city electorates.
On Monday, a grader she borrowed from Geoffrey Etwop arrived at the site and started opening the swamp that according to the rough estimate could take about UGX 190million to fix the broken bridge.
To Amongi, since she had borrowed a grader already, her estimate was that she would spend around UGX 1.5million on purchasing the culverts, murram and labor, and that would convince the electorates in the area to vote her overwhelmingly.
However, after opening the swamp and destroying all the existing culverts that had been merged by the water, got stuck with the only option of abandoning the project.
This publication has learnt that, after being overwhelmed by the cost of repairing the bridge, the infamous politician Amongi is now forging an escape route by shifting balms on Lira City Woman MP, Dr. Jane Aceng Ocero who is also the Minister of Health.
According to well-placed sources within her political camp, Amongi convened a meeting at former Presidents Milton Obote’s residence in Lira, where they framed lies that Minister Aceng is intimidating her and that she will stop the works.
The highly placed source revealed that, the said meeting, attended by Etop Geoffrey, Odongo Odul and Emmanuel Ebong Opeto, appointed Lira City West Speaker, Okello Daniel Okello and Akello Alaya to mobilize the community for a meeting to incite electorates against Minister Aceng.
The source revealed that, Mr.Cesar Ivan Okell, a former staff of Radio FM 94.3 FM was tasked to work hand-in-hand with Otim BF to mobilise the UPC-paid media individuals, who will be transported to Omito to cover and relay the meeting live on the local FM station in Lira City and Youtube Channels.
A plan according to the insider, is to organize a stage-manage a community meeting that will start with the site visit purportedly to inspect the works. It is during this meeting that Amongi or her agents Etwop, Okello Daniel and Akello Alaya would accuse Dr. Aceng of interfering with the works.
“The goal is to shift blame and incite the electorate against Aceng as Amongi appears the best candidate for 2026 Woman MP Seat. Here, people would have seen that, it’s Dr. Aceng who has interfered with Amongi’s ‘good’ works for the people of the area who desperately need the road fixed.
One of the UPC staunch supporters who had been engaged to mobilise to spread the lies against Dr. Aceng, is also negative about the move. He said If minister Amongi truly had the interests of the people at heart, she would take responsibility, engage the right technical experts, and push for proper funding rather than resorting to diversionary tactics.
“Instead of blaming and fabricating lies against Dr. Aceng as she withdraws from the project, Amongi should rather accept her own failure to properly assess the work required,” another UPC stalwart has observed.
