From around 2020 and during the campaign trail of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine and after the 2021 general elections onwards, several National Unity Platform [NUP] supporters have been picked by both uniformed and non-uniformed men and driven them away in the famous Drone vehicles.

Some have been bailed out while others are still rotting in jail and all efforts to secure bail for those still being held and tried by the military court remain futile the recent being Members of parliament led by Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi where the political prisons still failed to secure their freedom.

A few fearless Religious Leaders have often times rallied government to release these political prisoners ahead of the 2026 general elections while those who feel it’s all politics remain silent and are not bothered by the same.

Some political prisoners are known to be in jail while others disappeared and have never been seen again, not even in known prisons. NUP has demanded to know their whereabouts but also these efforts remain futile.

In his Eid-el-Adha message in Kibuli today, Prince Kasim Nakibinge once again urged government to release the political prisons or bring evidence, try them and sentence them than holding them now three years.

Nakibinge who’s the titular head of the Moslem community in Uganda and part of the Buganda royal family said holding a suspect for long signals that the prosecution has no implicating evidence to try such a person.

In the aftermath of the attack on the Rwenzururu kingdom palace in November 2016 in a raid commanded by now sanctioned Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, 100s of Royal guards and their King Charles Wesley Mumbere were jailed only to be granted their freedom in June 2023.
