On 23rd January 2022, the then Bank of Uganda Governor Prof Emmanuel Tumusime Mutebire died from Nairobi Hospital at the age of 72 years. He had been governor for close to 20 years having been appointed in 2001.
Ever since Mutebire died, president Museveni had never appointed a new central bank governor. Mutebire’s Deputy Dr Micheal Atingi-Ego has been serving as Deputy not even acting governor.

But in a letter seen by this publication, signed by president Museveni, he has named the new governor Bank Bank of Uganda. He has elevated Dr Micheal Atingi-Ego as Central Bank boss and appointed Busoga Kingdom Premier Dr Joseph Muvawala to be his Deputy.
Muvawala is an economist who at the time of his new job at the Central Bank has been the Director of National Planning Authority.
