While speaking at the International Women’s day celebrations held yesterday at Boma grounds in Katakwi district, Museveni revealed that he refused to accept bride price for his daughters but instead paid dowry to the families of his-in-laws just like the Indian do.

Contrary to tradition in Ankole where the groom’s family has to pay in money or properties to the bride’s family, Museveni said he instead chose to pay dowry to families which took his three daughters.

According to Museveni, this is a demonstration of the social economic transformation that all Ugandan families need to realize if they are to combat Gender-based violence and achieve women’s empowerment.

In many parts of Ankole, Museveni said that families which became wealthy from commercialized cattle keeping under his leadership, have moved away from such as giving and taking bride price, they instead pay the in-laws families.

On the narration of his Minister Namuganza who attended a wedding in Ankole recently between a Musoga groom and a Munyankole bride, the bride’s family did not accept the groom’s gifts but instead asked them to choose any number of cows they wanted and the groom’s family went back with 90 cows.

“The groom’s family couldn’t believe it but that’s what happens when families move out of poverty”-said Museveni

He also revealed that even himself had managed to move away from the practice of asking for price while his daughters are getting married. Museveni has three known daughters with his wife Janet Kataha Museveni, these are Patience, Natasha and Dianah.

Dianah Museveni married Geofrey Kamuntu a Kampala business man in July 2004, Natasha Keinembabazi Museveni married Edwin Karugire on 26th August 2000 while Patience Kokundeka Museveni married Odrek Rwabwogo on 20th July 2002. Another Museveni daughter Angela Kakishozi born out of his second relationship married Gen Henry Tumukunde’s son Amanya Tumukunde on 26th February 2022.

Speaking about how he pays dowry to families taking his daughter, Museveni said “All my girls are married and I am a big grandfather. But I am the one who pays the bride price for them when they get married, I always accompany them with cows”

His son Muhoozi Keinerugaba is married former foreign affairs Minister Sam Kutesa’s twin daughter Charlotte Nankunda Kutesa, the two have been together since 1999.
