The new leader of opposition has made it clear on the floor of parliament that his primary job is to keep government in check not taking selfies and dining with government as Ugandans continue to decry poor service delivery.

In his maiden speech at parliament after being approved by the house, Ssenyonyi said the Rule 14 (1) of the Rules of Procedure stipulates that the main principle role of the Leader of Opposition is to keep government in check.

The opposition in parliament provides alternative policies against those brought forward by government though they’re not considered but it keeps government in check for betterment.

Ssenyonyi was announced new leader of opposition by his party’s Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya on the 22nd December 2023 replacing Mpuuga whom most in government applauded his leadership style of not being aggressive to government despite being an opposition leader.

The Nakawa West legislator resigned from his journalism job at NTV Uganda in 2019 to join the then fast rising people power Movement and Bobi Wine as it’s spokesperson and has since raised through the ranks and because of hard work and loyalty, he was handed the big office by Bobi Wine.

On the side of Government while reacting to this, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua says Opposition is like a mirror and for as long as the checks and balances are for the common interest of the people of Uganda, they’re always welcome.
