What Ssenyonyi Said Immediately After Being Named New Leader of Opposition In Parliament

On May 3rd 2019, Joel Ssenyonyi who was a journalist and budding news anchor at Nation Media’s NTV resigned from his job to take up the position of being the spokesperson of Bobi Wine and the then People Power Movement which was greatly spreading the message of change ahead of the 2021 general elections.

Even when People transitioned into a fully fledged political party in 2020 of National Unity Platform after taking over from Mzee Moses Kibalama who had kept the party under the tables since 2004, Ssenyonyi still remained the spokesperson of the new party.

As 2021 drew closer, Ssenyonyi showed interest of representing the people of Nakawa in the 11th parliament. It however seemed to be a tough journey for him as the then incumbent Mayor of Nakawa Division Ronald Balimwezo had also showed interest to represent the people of Nakawa and had higher chances of taking that seat.

Out of luck, Museveni’s government opted to sub-divide Nakawa into two constituencies of Nakawa West and Nakawa East. With this new development, the two NUP diehards Ssenyonyi and Balimwezo had some sigh of relief as each settled of the newly created constituencies.

Indeed, Ssenyonyi opted for Nakawa West and Balimwezo opted for Nakawa East, both faced tough competitors. Balimwezo faced off with NRM’s Fred Ruhindi, FDC’s Micheal Kabaziguruka Andrew, Keeno Charles Ronny of DP and Mukiibi Elisha Mugisha, Katuramu Job Mutungi, Mbadwe John who contested as independent candidates. He won with 31263 votes as NRM’s Ruhindi got 11720 votes and FDC’s Kabaziguruka came third with 7467 votes.

Ssenyonyi on the other end in Nakawa West faced off with NRM’s Zziwa Margret Nantongo, City lawyer Keneth Paul Kakande, FDC’s Kyambadde Wilberforce, Acer Godfrey Okot, Shukla Mukesh, Asiimwe Robert, Katusiime Christine Gloria, Isabirye Zacharia, Aisha Wanyama among other candidates whom he beat hands down.

As NUP unveiled their parliamentary leadership, Ssenyonyi was appointed chairperson of the Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) previously held by FDC’s Mubarak Munyagwa. While at IT, Ssenyonyi has made heads roll with his investigations into the Uganda Railways Corporation, Ugandan Airlines, Civil Aviation Authority among others where facts have been unveiled though some reports especially like the one of Uganda airlines which pinned Bamuturaki ended up being trashed by speaker Anita Among.

Now after being named the new leader of opposition amidst talks that he would not handle the position very well being a first time member of parliament, Ssenyonyi says he’ll pick lessons from his predecessor Mpuuga who has been moved to the parliamentary commission where Zaake was last year ousted from.

FDC set a precedent of leaders of opposition to serve only two and half years and it was no different with Mpuuga. While Winnie Kiiza thought she would serve five years, Nandala Mafabi quickly ended her tenure as Leader of Opposition in parliament on 3rd August 2018 and immediately replaced her with the then Gulu district women representative Betty Aol Ochan. Nandala did the same to Abdul Katuntu and Anita Among who were heading COSASE then as he moved swiftly to replace them with Munyagwa and Moses Kasibante.

Ssenyonyi says ahead of the challenges in the shoes he’s set to wear, he’ll build on learning and working with his colleagues to steer the opposition mandate in parliament.

“Just like King Solomon prayed, I too pray for wisdom as I embark on this new role that comes with numerous challenges. By God’s grace, we shall surmount all the obstacles ahead. I salute Rt.Hon Mathias Mpuuga for his service, and I look forward to working with him and the other colleagues in Parliament”.-tweeted Ssenyonyi

The question now remains whether Ssenyonyi will remain the party spokesperson and deputized by Waiswa Alex Mufumbiro or he’ll settle for the big position and Mufumbiro be elevated to full party spokesperson.

The comment section is widely open, tells us what you say about Ssenyonyi’s appointment as the new Leader of Opposition in parliament for the remaining part of this term till 2026.
