Over the weekend, East African heads of state convened in Arusha for the 23rd Summit of the EAC Heads of state. During this summit the Federal Republic of Somalia was admitted into the East African Community to become the eight member state almost a year since the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was admitted into the bloc.
During the summit besides admitting Somalia into the bloc, the president of Burundi H.E Evariste Ndayishimiye handed over the chairmanship of the bloc to South Sudanese Salva Kiir Mayardit who will steer the bloc for a specified period of time. The summit also agreed to write off South Sudanese contribution to the bloc which was in arrears of over $30m.

However, all was well until the South Sudanese president was granted time to give his inaugural speech at the summit as the new bloc chairperson. The 72 year old who not so long ago even urinated ‘susudi’ on himself during a live event struggled to read a speech written for him.
Helped by the bloc’s secretary General Peter Mathuki, Kiir struggled to recognize his fellow heads of state and even read written speech something that left everyone surprised. During the struggle to deliver his inaugural speech in Arusha, the South Sudanese president ended up giving Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan the presidency of Rwanda, he went ahead to reduce Congo’s Felix Tshisekedi to Ugandan President Museveni’s representative.
The three minute video which has since gone viral on social media has made netizens to weigh the Age question and ability question of African leaders. And at 72 with all this happening to him publicly, Salva Kiir will be seeing presidency in the upcoming first ever presidential elections in south Sudan which he has led since independence in 2011.
