NAPAK: Police in Napak District in Karamoja region have arrested and detained two people in connection with the destructive act of vandalizing road sign posts along the Matany-Kokeris Road on the high way of Moroto, Soroti.
Micheal Longole the Karamoja regional police spokesperson says the suspects, identified as Ongom David (29 years old) and Loyile Isaac (25 years old), both residents of Longalom village in Matany Subcounty were arrested over the weekend as they were busy removing the road signs.
Longole says the arrest of the suspects was after Uganda National Roads Authority) staff, conducting routine surveillance on road tipped the police about massive vandalism on the road signposts and police quickly swung into action and started carrying underground investigations and arrested the suspects.
According to Longole the suspects were found in possession of 14 road sign posts along the Matany-Kokeris Road, subsequently selling them to scrap dealers.
“They use an axe to cut down the road signs and take them to sale as scraps”-Longole revealed
Longole further says such act was the main cause of road accidents adding that the motorists are not able to see road stretches hence getting accident.
“These sign posts serve as essential markers, ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users,”he said adding that the suspects will be charged with vanderlisim.
