KABOONG: Hundreds of mothers in Kaabong district are nolonger dying or losing their newborn babies while giving birth under the care of traditional birth attendants (TBA).
This is after the Kaabong district woman member of parliament Ms Christine Nakwang introduced the distribution of mama kits for all mothers who deliver at the health facility. This website learnt that every woman who’s pregnant now keeps visiting the nearest health facility for antenatal services and also go and deliver at the hospital instead of care of traditional birth attendants.
Margaret Nakiru one of the village health team in Kalapata sub county said ever since the woman member of parliament introduced the distribution of mama kits to mother’s delivering in the health facility, they have not registered any death of newborn babies or even their mothers because they are now well attended to.
“Mothers used to die silently in the hands of the traditional birth attendants and they don’t report but we thank the hon Nakwang for her support,”She said.
Grace Nachap one of the mothers who delivered last week at Kaabong hospital says most mothers used to fear to go and give birth to the health facility due to lack of mama kits and other things for carrying their newborn babies.
“Nurses don’t spare, they can harass mothers especially those without mama kits but since hon Nakwang started supporting mothers with mama kits two years back, many mothers now love delivering at the health facility”-she revealed.
According to Ms Nachap she has survived death twice from the hands of the TBA.
“My first kid I experienced a lot of bleeding from the TBA but I think God just wanted me to survive and now my two deliveries at the health facility there is no problem no bleeding”-Nachap says.
Speaking to this website hon Christine Nakwang confirmed supporting the mothers saying it had been a big challenge for pregnant mothers. She said apart from supporting pregnant mothers, she has been educating quite many disadvantaged children and that others have competed their courses.
“I have supported 25 youth who have completed their driving courses others are already driving NGOs while others still looking for jobs,”he said.
This website also learnt that Ms Nakwang has also supported about 70 saving groups where women, girls and boys have saved over 70million in their various groups.
