The staff of Hoima Regional Referral hospital are on spot for the poor services at the hospital. This follows an impromptu visit to the hospital by the Woman MP for Hoima City Hon Nyakato Asinansi aka Kamanda.

Nyakato who visited the hospital this past weekend noted gross mismanagement at the hospital and wondered what the administration is doing.

MP Nyakato Asinansi Speaking To Journalists At The Hospital

Among the issues found in the hospital was selling of blood to patients between 100,000 to 200,000. She wondered why blood is being sold yet the it is donated for free. Nyakato also says the locals are poor and can’t afford to pay for the blood and as a result many people are dying.

She further notes that a caesarian section for women delivering goes for 300,000 to 600,000 and wonders why a government hospital would charge that money yet Parliament has been appropriating money to run the hospital.

The legislator was also concerned about the poor hygiene of the hospital especially in the wards, toilets, a bushy compound and other places. Nyakato and the media team were surprised to find a dog in the maternity ward and they were told that it was owned by one of the staff at the hospital.

She has also told our reporter that the hospital beds in Hoima Referral hospital have no mosquito nets which exposes patients to malaria.

Nyakato who visited the hospital after receiving complaints from the general public over many deaths in the hospital says that by the time she reached the hospital at 10:00 AM, five people had already died and their bodies were still lying in the wards as there was no medical personnel to attend to them. She said only nurses from Hoima school of Nursing were present at the hospital.

The legislator also notes with concern that there have been reports of some medical personnel who have overstayed at the hospital for decades and have taken the hospital as their home and as a result do not care about the patients.

One of the staff who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity says that some of the heads of departments who have overstayed have been harassing them and says they have reported to various authorities and are yet to see a solution.

Nyakato promised to table the issues before Parliament as well as engaging the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Heath Dr Diana Atwine and Minister Ruth Acheng about the issues.

The locals that this publication interacted with thanked Hon Nyakato for visiting their hospital and say they were hopeful that the services will improve.

A boda boda rider identified as John says they were tired of health workers who don’t want to work and thanked the MP for visiting the hospital and exposing them. Nyakato however says that any genuine concerns by the health workers will be addressed but argued them to perform their duties.

Efforts to reach the DHO were futile as he never picked our phones.
