Minister for Karamoja affairs Mary Goreti Kitutu on this Holly Thursday ahead of Good Friday has been remanded to Luzira prison together with her brother Naboya Kitutu over the Mabaati scandal that’s dominating headlines and airwaves in and around Uganda.
The Minister who was detained on Tuesday evening after a short interface with the Ababiku-led presidential affairs committee and held at the CID headquarters in Kibuli was arraigned before court where she denied the charges leveled against her among these including abuse of office, corruption among others.

Despite her lawyer trying to convince court that his client is having several health issues that can’t allow her be in prison.
“Kitutu is a resident of Bunga, owns property in Kololo, & Wakiso. she is a mother of 7 and has seven grandchildren. She is ready to deposit the land titles in court if granted bail. She suffers from hypertensive heart disease with left ventricle stiffness.” Said her lawyer.
The state attorney however struck these pleas down sighting that the sureties that Kitutu presented are not up to standard.
Now the minister will have to enjoy Easter behind bars of Luzira prison and will re-appear in court on 12th April 2023 to hear her bail application. The judge clearly told Kitutu and her brother to go sleep in prison since he wouldn’t be able to prepare a ruling on her bail application because of time.
“I would have lied if I told you I can come up with a ruling in the next minutes…”said the judge.
Her arraignment before court has elicited mixed reactions with several Ugandans asking why of all the ministers involved, it’s only her who has been charged while leaving Minister Kasaija, Lugolobi, Nabakooza, Nabbanja, Speaker Anita Among, and other beneficiaries untouched.
