The Electoral commission has today announced suspension of the women council elections that were set for next month.
According to a statement issued by the commission’s chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, the roadmap has been which the commission announced earlier in February and was remaining with nominations and elections has been suspended due to lack of funds to go on with the remaining activities.
“Accordingly, the Commission informs the general public, Political Party leaders and women in particular, that the remaining programme for the elections of Village Women Councils and Committees, shall not be implemented as earlier scheduled”-reads part of the statement.
By the time of the suspension, the commission had finalized the compilation of the Village Women Residents’ Register and is currently conducting the Display of the said Registers at each Village/Cell across the country in preparation for subsequent activities, namely, nomination of candidates and polling at the Village level.
The electoral commission further says the remaining activities including the nominations which had been scheduled for 27th June to 1st July have been suspended and a new program will be issued when the funds are readily available.
