Dortmund Hope For More From Sancho After First Goal

Dortmund's Jadon Sancho (R) celebrates his side's second goal of the game with teamates Marcel Sabitzer, Niklas Suele and Nico Schlotterbeck during the German Bundesliga Soccer match between SV Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund at the Weser Stadium. Borussia Dortmund hope that Jadon Sancho can score more goals in the coming weeks starting with a Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

Sancho arrived in January on loan for the rest of the season from Manchester United, and scored a classy second in Dortmund’s 2-1 victory at Werder Bremen on Saturday.Sancho added to the 38 goals he scored during his first Dortmund term 2017-2021, and the 39 make him joint most successful Englishman in the German top flight, the other being former Cologne player Tony Woodcock.

Dortmund are fourth, one point ahead of RB Leipzig, as they chase a berth in the next Champions League, while in this season’s competition they are aiming for a quarter-final spot after drawing 1-1 in Eindhoven in the first leg.

Dortmund hope that Sancho can help them reach these goals as the 23-year-old aims to rebuild his career after not playing in many months at United after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag.

“We need Jadon, again on Wednesday and over the next weeks as well. Goals help. He previously had a assist. This goal will give him a boost,” sporting director Sebastian Kehl said.

Looking at the game in Bremen, he added: “He awarded himself for his work. Everyone was happy for Jadon because they can see that he wants it, that he works, that he is totally willing to help the team.”

Coach Edin Terzic revealed that Sancho was “very dissatisfied after the game because he said he lost too many balls.

“That’s what I like about him, he doesn’t reduce his performance to the goal.”

Terzic said it was “only logical that he isn’t his former self yet, considering the last 12 months. It’s like a player having a cruciate ligament tear.”

“Abortion Must Be a Right In EU”-Says Europe’s Liberals And Greens

0

Senior figures from the Green and liberal factions in the European Parliament have spoken in favour of including the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Green parliamentary group leader Terry Reintke and Valérie Hayer, who is the leader of the liberal Renew group, spoke to Germany’s RND media group for an interview published on Sunday.

“The right to safe abortion belongs in the EU Charter as a fundamental right,” Reintke, a German politician who has served as a member of the European Parliament since 2014, told RND.

The right for a woman to make autonomous decisions about their body should not depend on which political parties happen to hold power at any given time, she said. Hayer, an MEP from France and ally of Macron, also told RND that she supported the French president’s initiative.

“While the radical right is working hard to find new ways to push through its reactionary agenda, we in a truly liberal society must stand up for women’s rights more resolutely than ever: The right to abortion must be enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, because we must never leave women’s rights to the populists,” she said.

Macron declared on Friday that the freedom to have an abortion should be included in the charter, which acts as a bill of rights for EU citizens.

France anchored the right to abortion into its constitution following a landmark vote in parliament on Monday. Abortions up to the 10th week of pregnancy have been allowed in France since 1975. Since then, the law has changed to allow abortions up to the 14th week.

In Germany, Leverkusen Beat Wolfsburg As Frankfurt Settle Safely In Sixth

0
Bayer Leverkusen took another giant step towards their first Bundesliga title on Sunday after a 2-0 home win over 10-man Wolfsburg re-established their 10-point lead at the top.
Bayern Munich, who have sealed the last 11 championships, hammered Mainz 8-1 on Saturday to temporarily trim the gap but Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Leverkusen never looked like losing and now have just nine games left.

“We started well even before the red card in the first 15-20 minutes. We had control,” Alonso told DAZN. “We could maybe have taken more risks but…it was a sensible performance.”

They were helped by Moritz Jenz, wearing a mask due to a facial injury, receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Patrik Schick after just 28 minutes.

Leverkusen, who had already hit the post through the mercurial Florian Wirtz, broke through the Wolves’ defences on 37 with a flowing move.

The ball eventually reached Alejandro Grimaldo, one of the players of the season, and the Spaniard produced some outrageous skill to beat his man and cross from Nathan Tella to net an easy header.

Germany’s Wirtz, another of the Bundesliga’s stand-out names this term, then got a deserved goal late on with a fine volley.

Alonso’s achievement in his first major coaching job, having taken over last season with the Werkself near the bottom, has led him to being linked with the soon-to-be-vacant coaching jobs at former clubs Bayern and Liverpool.

The way he has dealt with the injury absence of top scorer Victor Boniface since January is also remarkable, with his side barely missing a beat as they amassed 21 wins from 25 Bundesliga games.

They are also still in the German Cup and Europa League, where they host Azerbaijan’s Qarabag in a last-16 second leg on Thursday following a 2-2 draw.

Sixth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt earlier fought back to win 3-1 at home against rivals Hoffenheim while Freiburg also won to keep their hopes of a European spot alive.

Freiburg beat fourth-bottom Bochum 2-1 away to go eighth, with nine-men Hoffenheim now in seventh on the same points but ahead on goal difference.

Frankfurt occupy the guaranteed Conference League spot having increased their cushion to seven points, but seventh might also be enough for Europe depending on who wins the German Cup.

John Anthony Brooks headed in an early corner for Hoffenheim but the American was then shown a straight red midway through the first half for a professional foul.

The hosts levelled through another centre back, Robin Koch, before the interval and a header after a good move from Éric Dina Ebimbe put Frankfurt in the lead after the break.

Mario Götze made the game safe on 64 minutes, especially when Ozan Kabak received a second booking to leave Hoffenheim with nine men.

In Bochum, Freiburg’s Gregoritsch set up Maximilian Eggestein for his first of the season and the Austria forward then headed in himself before Ivan Ordets cut the deficit.

“A win like this is extremely important for morale,” said Gregoritsch, who came into the starting line-up having scored the winner off the bench in Thursday’s Europa League clash against West Ham. Their second leg is also this Thursday.

Bochum, who had their chances and a penalty appeal waved away, were looking strong at home but have now lost their last two games at the Ruhrstadion since stunning Bayern 3-2 there last month.

It is three defeats in a row for Thomas Letsch’s side, who are seven points above Cologne in the relegation play-off spot.

Bayern Not In a Hurry, Haven’t Talked To Any Coach Or Kimmich Yet

0

Bayern Munich have so far not held talks with potential candidates for the vacant coaching job in summer and are also yet to sit down with key player Joshua Kimmich about a renewal.

The Bundesliga champions announced last month that they would part ways with coach Thomas Tuchel after the season, which has led to plenty of speculation about the future helmsman.

Former Bayern player Xabi Alonso, who is in charge of league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, is considered a top target for Bayern, but board member for sport Max Eberl said after Saturday’s 8-1 thrashing of lowly Mainz they haven’t talked with anyone so far.

“We have a list of priorities we are working on,” Eberl said, naming a potential takeover fee as one of many aspects. Sporting director Christoph Freund added: “There are many coaches. We are trying to find the best possible option.”

Freund said the club doesn’t want to wait too long but at the same time is determined to do “the right thing.”

Looking at midfielder and full back Kimmich, Freund said: “There will be talks with Jo, he had a really good game. Jo is a really good footballer, and a very important factor for the team.”

German international Kimmich has a contract until 2025 which means that Bayern can only generate a transfer fee in summer if he doesn’t want to stay.

Kimmich said: “My situation is very clear. I have a contract for more than a year. No one has talked to me yet. That’s why I am very relaxed.

“At the end of the day it is about showing my performance. We have European championships coming up, and then we will see what happens,” he said in reference to this summer’s Euro 2024 in Germany.

“I feel good in Munich. It is not bad here, although the past years where not quite as successful from a sporting side,” Kimmich said, with Bayern only winning the Bundesliga in past years but not succeeding in the German Cup and Champions League.

West Ham, Burnley Share Spoils As Ings Ends Goal Drought At London Stadium

0

Danny Ings scored his first Premier League goal in more than a year as West Ham came from two down to snatch a 2-2 draw against his former club Burnley. The ex-England striker had probably his best game for the Hammers despite only coming on as a substitute in the 82nd minute.

Ings had a goal disallowed, then scored the equalizer and hit the crossbar in stoppage time at the end of a barmy match.

ADVERT: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

A long-range strike from David Datro Fofana and an own goal by Konstantinos Mavropanos had put Burnley, who kicked off rock bottom in the Premier League and had not scored for a month, two up at half-time.

West Ham, on the back of a not particularly arduous 1-0 Europa League defeat in Freiburg, were lethargic and sloppy for 45 minutes but, inspired by Lucas Paqueta and Ings, hit back for a point.

They fell behind after only 11 minutes, although there did not appear to be any danger when Fofana picked the ball up 40 yards out. But the Chelsea loanee strolled through powder-puff challenges from Nayef Aguerd and Kalvin Phillips before launching a rocket from 25 yards into the top corner.

Phillips would probably have been a shoo-in for Thursday’s England squad had he stayed on Manchester City’s bench this season.

But his loan switch to West Ham has been little short of disastrous so far and, with England boss Gareth Southgate watching from the stands, the midfielder looks in serious danger of playing himself out of the squad for this summer’s Euros.

West Ham’s abject first-half display was summed up neatly when their former youngster Josh Cullen crossed low from the left and Mavropanos stuck out a foot to divert the ball past Alphonse Areola.

James Ward-Prowse and Jarrod Bowen are also on Southgate’s radar, but both had days to forget. The latter headed his only chance wide and the former, along with Phillips, was hooked at half-time.

Edson Alverez and Michail Antonio were thrown on instead and within a minute West Ham had halved the deficit, Paqueta pouncing on some sloppy Burnley possession, striding forward and confidently beating James Trafford.

Mohammed Kudus should have equalized when he collected Bowen’s cross and had a free shot after Lorenz Assignon opted to go down clutching his face rather than defend his goal, but luckily for him the Ghana winger blazed over from 10 yards.

West Ham thought they had equalized when Ings prodded home but a VAR check showed Antonio was a fraction offside when he chested the ball into his team-mate’s path.

Yet at the start of eight minutes of stoppage time, a product of Burnley’s almost incessant time-wasting, Ings collected a pass from Kudus, turned and fired through Trafford.

The £12million signing from Aston Villa in January last year almost won it moments later but his shot crashed back off the crossbar.

Spurs Boost Champions League Hopes After Roaring At Villa Park 4-0

0

Tottenham inflicted a chastening 4-0 home defeat on 10-man Aston Villa as Ange Postecoglou’s men emphatically won this key battle in the race for Champions League qualification.

Sunday’s crunch clash between fourth and fifth was described in the build-up by Villa skipper John McGinn as “the most important game in the club’s recent history”.

ADVERT: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

Unai Emery’s men had the chance to move eight points clear of Spurs in the final guaranteed Champions League spot, but instead the hosts’ captain saw red in an embarrassing second-half collapse.

Tottenham moved within two points of Villa with a win that started with James Maddison turning home a brilliant Pape Matar Sarr cross in the 50th minute.

Brennan Johnson scored a fantastic second three minutes later and McGinn’s rash, frustrated challenge on Destiny Udogie led to a straight red card that ended Villa hopes of a comeback.

Son Heung-min and substitute Timo Werner struck in stoppage time as Spurs secured a statement win in the Midlands, ending Villa’s run of three straight Premier League wins in this fixture.

The players emerged to smoke and pyrotechnics at Villa Park but there were no first-half fireworks to write about. Ollie Watkins threatened to punish Spurs’ high line early on, with Micky van de Ven’s recovery pace bailing out Cristian Romero after the in-form striker burst past beyond him.

Another example of that approach saw Watkins slipped through before the offside flag saved the Villa striker’s blushes after his undercooked pass to Leon Bailey was cut out by Pedro Porro.

Guglielmo Vicario punched away a testing McGinn free-kick and Matty Cash prodded wide after a cutback was blocked, while at the other end Villa’s five-man defence was keeping Spurs’ attack quiet.

Villa went close to taking the lead on the stroke of half-time from a short corner. The ball was laid back for McGinn to hit a well-struck cross and Lucas Digne’s flicked header looped narrowly wide.

Postecoglou’s men escaped that threat and came back from the break with a pep in their step, and not even Van de Ven’s early withdrawal could throw them off kilter. The injured Tottenham defender had to be replaced by Radu Dragusin and headed down the tunnel just as his team-mates and the away end burst into celebration behind him.

Sarr hit an outstanding cross from the right that Maddison met ahead of a pair of Villa defenders to turn home in the 50th minute. The Spurs man wheeled off to celebrate with the away end, then turned to the home fans when bringing out his darts celebration.

The visiting hordes were on their feet again three minutes later as Ezri Konsa’s poor pass to Tielemans was cut out brilliantly by Dejan Kulusevski, with Son collecting the ball and playing on to Johnson to brilliantly bend beyond Emiliano Martinez.

Emery responded by changing personnel and shape, only to be derailed by McGinn’s dismissal in the 65th minute. The frustrated Villa skipper wiped out Udogie with a stupid tackle, leading to a clash involving both teams as referee Chris Kavanagh brandished a straight red card.

“2-0 in your cup final” bellowed the gleeful travelling fans, who saw Kulusevski try to add a third as they cruised against the 10-man hosts.

Vicario spread himself to stop substitute Nicolo Zaniolo but Tottenham were in control and struck twice more late on. Son lashed home from Kulusevski’s pass in the 91st minute and substitute Werner completed the rout four minutes into the additional 10 as the home fans cleared out.

Macario Fires Blues Into Final Four At Everton

0

Substitute Catarina Macario scored three minutes after her second-half introduction to send Chelsea through to the FA Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over Everton at Walton Hall Park.

The United States international was still recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament issue when she signed for the Blues last summer but made an emphatic first impression when she scored on her debut in last week’s Women’s Super League victory over Leicester.

Emma Hayes made six changes from Thursday’s Conti Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City, but Chelsea failed to find an opener in a cagey first half.

The Blues came closest with a crossbar-clipping header by Nathalie Bjorn before the centre-back was forced off and replaced by Niamh Charles in the 14th minute.

The Toffees had their chances too, Kathrine Kuhl forcing Zecira Musovic into a good save with a sharp effort but could not make anything of a series of set-pieces.

Chelsea wasted their best chance to take the lead before the break when Jelena Cankovic curled wide from a promising position following some good work by Johanna Kaneryd to release the Serbia international.

Macario, one of four second-half substitutions for Chelsea, finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when she swept home Aggie Beever-Jones’ cut-back.

Katja Snoeijs was inches away from squaring things up, but Chelsea clung on to keep alive their chances of becoming just the second English side in history to secure a quadruple, with Arsenal having done so in 2007.

The WSL leaders, who will find out their FA Cup semi-final opponents in Tuesday morning’s draw, face Ajax in their Champions League quarter-final this month before taking on Arsenal for the Conti Cup on March 31.

Manchester United and Leicester had already booked trips to the FA Cup last four with victories on Saturday, while Tottenham added their name into the hat following a nervy 4-3 penalty shootout win over Manchester City in Sunday’s late kick-off.

Australia international Mary Fowler’s deflected effort fired City to the lead inside six minutes, but Bethany England scored a dramatic equaliser in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time and neither side could find a winner in extra time.

Spurs keeper Rebecca Spencer saved spot kicks from England duo Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly, ultimately allowing Amy Turner to seal her side a first FA Cup semi-final appearance.

Klopp Says Liverpool Were Denied “100% Penalty” In City Draw

0

Jurgen Klopp was convinced his Liverpool side should have had a second penalty in the final moments of their 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

John Stones put City ahead when converting Kevin De Bruyne’s well-worked corner in the first half but the Reds hauled themselves level through Alexis Mac Allister’s spot kick after 50 minutes, awarded after Ederson hacked down Darwin Nunez.

ADVERT: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

A thrilling contest ended level but only after VAR reviewed another home penalty appeal in the dying moments, with Jeremy Doku’s swinging clearance appearing to have caught Alexis Mac Allister in the chest.

Officials opted to take no further action, though Klopp was convinced the high foot should have been punished. He said: “It was 100% penalty. They will find an explanation. It was 100% foul in all areas of the pitch and probably a yellow card.

Jurgen Klopp argued his case to the officials after the full time whistle
Jurgen Klopp argued his case to the officials after the full time whistle

“All the people with iPads around me were saying, ‘Wow, clear’. Maybe they can hide behind the phrase it is not clear and obvious. “It is of course a penalty but we didn’t get it and that is fine.”

The result sees Arsenal remain top of the Premier League after their 2-1 victory over Brentford on Saturday, thanks to a goal-difference advantage over Liverpool — with City just a point behind in third.

Still, Klopp remains positive and praised the fight his side showed in coming from a goal behind.

He said: “Sensational. First 10 minutes we were in a bit of a rush and Manchester City were directly there. “The second half was the best we ever played against City, definitely. They hit the post of course, but we should have scored two or three goals. Exceptional football game.  “For me, we proved today the first time 100% we are exactly where we should be. We will fight for it and see what we can get.”

BREAKING NEWS: Muslims To Start Fasting Tomorrow

2

In the news this evening, Muslims across the world will start fasting tomorrow after moon was sighted today evening.

The holly month of Ramadan will start on Monday 11th March 2024. The sacred month, which sees those observing abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset, marks a period of religious reflection, family get-together and giving across the Muslim word.

Saudi state television reported authorities there saw the moon. Soon after, Gulf Arab nations largely followed the announcement to confirm they as well would start fasting on Monday. Muslims at Uganda Supreme Council at Old Kampala have also announced that fasting in Uganda would start tomorrow.

ADVERT: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

It’s however reported that some Asia-Pacific countries like Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, will begin Ramadan on Tuesday after failing to see the crescent moon. Oman, on the easternmost edge of the Arabian Peninsula, simmilarly announced Ramadan will begin on Tuesday.

On the sidelines, this year’s Ramadan comes as the Middle East remains inflamed by Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. That’s raised fear that conflict may spark unrest far beyond current boarders of the war.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had been urging the public to watch the skies from Sunday night in preparation for the sighting of the crescent moon. Ramadan works on a lunar calendar and moon-sighting methodologies often vary between countries, meaning some nations declare the start the month earlier or later but for the case of Uganda, Muslims wait for the announcement in Saudi Arabia and also announce back home.
