ODAKA ASUMAN: Open Letter To Dr. Tanga Odoi And The Legal Status Of His Threats

0

By Odaka Asuman

Open letter to Dr. Fred Odoi Tanga

Salutations Dr. Frederick Odoi Tanga. This is Odaka Asuman, the only one you most likely know by that name, the son of your brother.

The only one you told to be bold, frank, fearless but always respectful. I still remember those words of counsel you said to me in 2006 (we had gone to UBC Ground Zero talk show) at the height of the struggle against the division of Tororo.

Uncle Fred, i have come across an audio making rounds on social media attributed to you. On close examination, there is proof up to 55% that it’s your voice. I put it at 55% because in this era of computers, anyone can manipulate anything to achieve anything.

But on the assumption that it’s yours, the content of which has principiated me to write to you this public letter since the audio itself has also gone public and causing jeers, frowns and rate doping for you on the table of men of social status as yours.

Uncle Fred, the content and message in the audio are loathsome, contemptible, and contemptuous but also EXTREMELY reckless and falsely ballooning.

AD: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

It seems to have been made on the assumption that you are communicating to a very naïve audience, illiterates with no basic knowledge of their legal and constitutional entitlement or even exposed to basic current affairs.

The objective of the utterances could have been to project yourself as far beyond the law with unlimited authority to dictate the course process of the law, that you are way above the law and that you can do anything even extra-judicial,; including ordering for the arrest and detention of anyone and still get away with it. In simple terms, you’re the almighty.

This, you know, is only a fictitious imagination because (ordinarily) no one has such powers, not even the president. And such impunity SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED TO THRIVE anywhere in Tororo because we SHALL RESIST.

And if there are any law enforcement personnel(s) (being it police, magistrate, etc) who ever allows to be used in such a scheme, we SHALL not only confront but also expose in accordance with all laws, rules, procedures and processes.

I sound tough because the sense of entitlement in the audio can’t be claimed by even Gen. Muhoozi Keinerugaba, the son of the president. In fact its very unlikely that Mr. Museveni or anyone who wields real power in this country would make such a reckless statement much less, you sir.

Uncle Frederick, you know i respect you very immensely, i know you as a respectful and respected man, a debater and and activists but this audio left me wondering how fixed against the corner, you got boxed to make you forget even the basic facts relating to political history of this country.

The circumstances surrounding this road issue and the legal liberty every citizen has to demonstrate and /or protest against any issue and no one, absolutely nobody has a right to stop him or her unless in accordance with the law.

To put it even clearer, the chairman of the electoral commission of NRM has no obligation, no right, and absolutely no role in enforcing the law except the limited one given to every ordinary citizen. The only role the chairman of NRM has is to organize internal elections of the NRM, and that is the A-Z of it. Anything beyond that is extra-curricular.

Uncle Frederick, those of us who know where God brought you thank Him for you, the ladder and honor of success He has accorded you. Your life story is a reference that hard work pays.

But also remember that nature is a dictator. It dictates are that once you attain a certain social class, there are certain words it won’t allow you to utter, places it won’t allow you to go and things it won’t allow you to say and if you defy, society will look at you with suspicion even if nobody gathers courage to tell you.

Lastly, even if those honorable councilors were telling lies against your role in having them jailed (which i can’t believe because you don’t have such power anywhere), these utterances to an impartial listener, make you look bad, reckless, shabby and arrogant. And mind you, society NEVER SIDES WITH THE ARROGANT.

This audio has made me understand why Gen. Moses Ali once wanted to fight Hon. Semujju Nganda when the Nganda referred to him simply as a former Iddi Amin minister of Finance or when the same Semujju called Hon. Nsaba Buturo as former DC of Kampala and Hon. Buturo was handy at explaining himself.

I don’t hope you want to put yourself in that position or even my cousins positions where you, they or we have to explain y(our) selves in future. Think about this uncle.

Lastly, i want to sound a word of support for those leading voices to have the Tororo-Nagongera road tarmacked. Anyone who thinks by speaking out, we are embarrassing NRM or Mr. Museveni should tell him to come and make the road. We are tired of lies.

That road has been in the national budget for more than 10 years. So the voice speaking against the lies shouldn’t be silence by anyone.

If there is anyone who has led more demonstrations and protests in Uganda, its uncle Frederick Odoi Tanga. He organized and led countless protests when he was Chairman MUWASA and even before as a student.

The road belongs to the central government, and as taxpayers, we are duty bound to keep reminding the intransigent government of its obligations. If that obligation embarrasses it, then let it make a law jurisdiction itself from making the road.

The poor state of affairs in regard to service delivery must also be blamed on you, Dr. Tanga Odoi. In the last last elections, you heavily participated in bringing very inactive, sycophantic people in leadership positions.

As a result, the community is suffering. The few who are breaking ranks to speak about the poor state of affairs are being called names. This we shall NEVER allow in any future elections for the greater good of our people.

Uncle Fred, many Japadhola and indeed many Ugandans are in pains wanting to respect and be proud of you and your works. But your current styles, verbose and conduct is putting all this in jeopardy

God bless Padhola, God bless Tororo, and God bless Uganda.

FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY

NAM SUMMIT: What Is Nonalignment In The Era Of Globalization?

0

As I wrote in an article on “Peace in a globalized world: Does it always mean the absence of war?” our World is so interconnected and interdependent that globalization is proceeding with the agency of trade and technology, especially the World Wide Web or Internet that it is foolhardy to talk of independence or nonalignment.

However, political powers are resisting Internet and trying to role their back into the 20th Century when the World Wide Web was emerging. Despite the increasingly intricate interconnections and interdependences, some countries are stuck with the idea of nonalignment.

AD: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

The cardinal question is: Is Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) still relevant?
As Basanta Nirola asked in his article “Is Non-Alignment Movement Still Relevant?” citing Gosh Peu (2014) in Globescope on 6th September 2020. it can be said that NAM’s contribution can be best assessed in terms of Six D’s- Decolonization, Detente, Disarmament, Development, Democratization and Dissemination.

The ten Principles of NAM agreed at the Afro-Asian Conference held in Bandung, Indonesia, in1955 are:

  1. Respect for fundamental human rights and of the objectives of the Charter of the United Nations on Human Rights
  2. Respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations
  3. Recognition of equality among all races and of the equality among all nations, both large and small
  4. Non-intervention or non-interference into the internal affairs of another country
  5. Respect of the right of every nation to defend itself , either individually or collectively in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations
  6. Non-use of collective defense pacts to benefit the specific interests of any of the great powers
  7. Non-use of of pressures by any country against other countries
  8. Refraining from carrying out or threatening to carry out aggression or from using force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another country
  9. A peaceful solution of all international conflicts in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations
  10. Promotion of mutual interests and cooperation

Although the Government of President Tibuhaburwa Museveni has violated some of these Principles over the last 38 years in power, and currently paying billions of dollars to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for the involvement of its soldiers in the robbery of its resources and killing of its people and other violations of human rights in that country before and soon after the overthrow of President Mobutu in the late 1990s, Uganda is hosting the 19th Summit of the Nonaligned Movement from 15th to 20th January 2024 in Kampala.

The theme of the Summit will be “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”. The Summit will follow closely after the meeting of Speakers of Parliaments in the Commonwealth.

It should also be remembered that before the African Union adopted globalization in 2002 as the pathway to Africa’s development the Uganda Government was the first country in Africa in 2000 to embrace globalization without asking many questions.

The City’s roads, which are often dusty during the dry season, flooded during the rainy season, full of potholes and too narrow in many parts of the city, are being speedily worked on. The speed with which they are being worked on is causing concern among residents. Many residents think that the roads are being worked on so opportunistically as if the Summit was not anticipated.

“What is being done to the roads is no more no less than makeshift, just for the sake of making them attractive for the NAM delegates during the Summit”, said one resident who stopped driving his car on the potholed roads because the costs of repairing his car had shot up beyond his means”

“We shall back to the abnormal, which has become the norm, of moving on narrow, potholed, dusty, may be flooded roads as soon as the Summit ends”, said another Ugandan. “I grew up in this stay and am now working in the same city. Iam now 35 years old. I have never travelled out of Uganda. I have always thought that Kampala was never without dusty, narrow, flooded roads. I think after the NAM Summit we shall go back to usual abnormal, which is the normal”.

Whatever the case, President Tibuhaburwa Museveni is destined to become the Chairman of NAM for the next three years (2024-2027). It is unlikely NAM will be bothered about the breaches of some of its Ten Principles by the Government of President Tibuhaburwa Museveni. Al it will want to achieve is success of the Kampala Summit.

Of course, the questions that are l looming at large in the heads of many inquisitive people are:

  • How nonaligned are African countries in general and Uganda in particular?
  • Is NAM still relevant long after the cold War between the West and East ended in 1991 and when the World is far more globalized than before, thanks to the intricate interconnectedness and interdependy through trade and technology, particularly World Wide Web?
  • Will NAM be relevant in this century of environment, new knowledge production and communication since these issues are not captured in its principles?

It is hoped that the rains will have subsided so that the usual city floods do not welcome the Nonaligned Countries Summit. But is the floods go the dust will take over. There is little the authorities can do about the dust although with efficient planning and professionalism, something can be done to ensure that city roads are not flooded.

Otherwise, the first summit of NAM took place in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1961 followed by the basic concept for the group originated in 1955 during discussions that took place at Afro-Asian Conference held in Bandung, Indonesia. It is today a political forum of 120 countries that are not formally aligned with or against any major power blocs.

It consists 53 countries from Africa, 39 from Asia, 26 from Latin America and the Caribbean, and two from Europe. NAM was founded in Belgrade, Serbia, in 1961 with the view to advancee the interests of developing countries in the context of Cold War confrontation between the Western and Eastern Power Blocs.

The power blocs were two: one led by the defunct Soviet Union (Eastern Power Block) and the other led by the United States of America (The Western Power Block). The founding fathers of the NAM were Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Josip Broz Tito of the defunct Yugoslavia, Sukarno of Indonesia, Gamel Nasser of Egypt and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana. In its first three decades NAM played a crucial role in the decolonization, the formation of new independent states and the democratization of international relations.

Currently, every African country (except South Sudan) is a member of the Non-Aligned Movement. I don’t know why South Sudan, the newest independent country in Africa, which became a member of the East African Community (EAC) recently, a member of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and the United Nations (UN) simultaneously soon after it weaned itself from Sudan around 2010, is not a member of NAM.

During 1989 and 1990, the Berlin Wall came down, borders between then West Germany and East Germany opened, and free elections ousted Communist regimes everywhere in Eastern Europe. In late 1991 the Soviet Union itself dissolved into its component republics. With stunning speed, the Iron Curtain was lifted and the Cold War came to an end.

But it had fueled armaments with chemical, biological and atomic weaponry and ensured that several attempts at disarmament failed to bear fruit. By the end of the Colf War, several Countries, had acquired chemical, biological and atomic weapons helped by either the Soviet Union or the USA.

In its prime the Soviet Union, former northern Eurasian empire (1917–1991) stretching from the Baltic and Black seas to the Pacific Ocean and, in its final years, it consisted of 15 Soviet Socialist Republics (SSRs); the reason the country was called Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The SSRs were Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belorussia, today known as Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirgiziya today known as Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, today known as Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The capital of the Soviet Union was Moscow then and now the capital of Russia.

In 1989 the Western Bloc consisted of USA, Canada, UK, France, West Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg), Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Greece and Turkey. Soon after the collapse of the USSR East Germany and West Germany became one country: Germany.

In all Cold War maps, the Western Bloc countries were coloured blue, and Eastern Bloc countries were coloured red. Blue was often associated with the sea, and many Western Bloc countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, have strong naval traditions.

Red, on the other hand, has historically been associated with socialism and communism, which were prevalent in many Eastern Bloc countries. The rest of the world was sandwiched between the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc. They had to choose either to be aligned to the East or West or manifest as nonaligned in NAM.

However, some neutral countries in Europe existed throughout the time the Cold War existed, between 1945 and the end of the cold war in 1991, namely: Austria, Finland, Switzerland and Sweden,

Nivedita Das Kundu (2007) wrote about the new sociopolitical and socioeconomic situation of the Former Soviet Union States (FSU) and their relation to Russia. The FSU states consist of 4 major blocks: The Slavic States (Slavs), the Baltic States (Balts), Central Asia and the Caucasus.

The Slavic States consist of Ukraine, Belarus (previously Belorussia) and Moldova. They have cultural and religious ties with each other. The Baltic States are on the East coast of the Baltic Sea. They include Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Central Asia consist of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

The Caucasus is a region in Eurasia bordered on the south by Turkey and Iran, on the West by the Black Sea, on the East by the Caspian Sea and to the North by the European part of Russia. The Caucasus Mountains divide Asia and Europe. The nation States of the Caucasus include Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, I do not know of any former Soviet Socialist Republics that have joined NAM.

For two years now Russia and Ukraine have been in a fierce war, because Ukraine wants to align itself with the West in the European Union and Russia detests that. In the war Belarus has openly aligned with Russia while the West has aligned with Ukraine. The war, which some writers, such as Samuel Raman (2024), have characterised as “Putin’s war on Ukraine, continues.

The West does not seem to be united in how to salvage Ukraine from Putin’s war on the country, although that country has openly announced that it wants to be part of Western Europe in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance that has persisted since the Cold War. Putin is fighting Ukraine because he does not want to hear of Ukraine bringing NATO at Russia’s doorstep.

NAM is grasping for contemporary relevance. It is clinging to outdated bloc mentalities within the United Nations and other global bodies. In so doing, NAM is undermining the search for constructive solutions to today’s most pressing, complex transnational problems (Stewart Patrick, 2012).Today such problems are called wicked problems because they don’t lend themselves easily to the simple analyses and solutions suggested by disciplinary scholars and professionals.

There is need to rethink neutrality and nonalignment for new era of globalization and renewed suspicions between Russia and the West and the Israeli military onslaught in the Middle East. NAM is not a legal entity.

It is also important to ask: How will NAM relate with the new phenomenon of BRICS in international relations? BRICS brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Russia used to be the key republic of the defunct USSR.

China is closely related to Russia politically, technologically, economically and militarily. Although not directly involved in Putin’s war in Ukraine, China has not condemned the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

One writer says “the NAM of the 21st century is pragmatic and instrumental but is also characterized by vocal opposition to issues such as the U.S. invasion of Iraq, reduced development assistance, climate and energy inequities and other “sins of the West.

For many NAM members and countries that have been supportive of the movement, like China, these historical grievances have made them reluctant – or at least hesitant – to side with the West in multilateral forums, which includes today an unwillingness to “take sides” between Russia and the West regarding the war in Ukraine”.

This reluctance was on full display early in the conflict when the U.N. General Assembly put forward a resolution in March 2022 condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While 141 U.N.-member states supported the measure, 25 abstained, including two influential NAM members, India and South Africa.

The following month, when the General Assembly voted to expel Russia from the Human Rights Council, more dissenting voices emerged, with 58 member states abstaining and 24 voting against it. These abstentions included the surprising additions of several large nations, like Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, Egypt and Indonesia, three of which are core members of the NAM.

It will be interesting to hear the stand of the members of NAM when they meet in Kampala on the issue of Israeli, intransigence, aggression, hostility, destruction and annihilation of life in Gaza, which was hitherto governed by the Palestine Authority Government. Some Members are supporting Israel while others are on the side of the Palestinians.

The USA, which has been a non-repentant supporter of Israel, has expressed concern over the war actions the small overmilitarized country in Gaza, which has also said it will never leave Gaza.

Western European countries are also divided over Israel. Russia’s stance cannot be pro-Israel because it has never, although many Jews flowed into the new country from Russia when it was created in 1948, mainly through orchestration by Great Britain, in an area previously occupied by Palestinians.

I have not heard the stand of the Uganda government on the Israeli war of annihilation in Gaza. However, early the Putin-Ukrainian Tibuhaburwa Museveni to host the NAM Summit in Kampala.

While the West was solidly on the side of Ukraine, President Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, then Commander of the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces UPDF) ground forces, almost dented Uganda’s nonaligned stance when, in 2022, he announced that he would send Ugandan troops to defend Moscow in case of an “imperialist” threat.

As if that was not enough, Uganda abstained from UN votes on the Ukrainian conflict, including one in February on the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which called on Moscow to withdraw its troops from the country.

Russia has traditionally had strong ties to Africa because of its support for independence movements on the continent that were then struggling with colonial powers, and also a source of military hardware for most political regimes in African including the NRM Regime in Uganda.

As indicated elsewhere in this article, many African countries shifted their votes, with only 10 African countries voting for the suspension, 24 African countries abstaining, and 11 not participating at all. This reflected the ties of Africa with Russia.

So, as Uganda prepares to host the NAM Summit in Kampala and for President Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s Chairmanship of the Movement for three years, the questions remain:

  • How nonaligned is Uganda?
  • How nonaligned is Africa?
  • How nonaligned is the African Union?
  • How relevant is the Nonaligned Movement in the 21st Century and beyond?
  • How will NAM relate with BRICS?
  • How will NAM take care of Environment, New Knowledge Production and Communication (Internet)?
  • How exactly will NAM make itself relevant in the 21st Century and Beyond?
  • What will NAM’s stance towards globalization?
  • Will Uganda and other members of the African Union rethink globalization?
  • Will the NAM Summit end up as another political ritual?

Hopefully answers to these questions will emerge from the 19th NAM Summit in Kampala.

What To Expect From The Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 Ahead Of Its Launch

0

While several manufacturers have released their twist on the foldable phone meta, including the OnePlus and Google Pixel series, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series has been successful in creating a name for itself in the mobile world. So much so that the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 is seen as a matter of when instead of if.

Thanks to the overwhelming success of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, users have very high hopes for the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6. That said, Samsung will likely make several changes to ensure the next phone in the Galaxy Flip series is even more of a success. This includes changes to the camera, screen, and more.

While the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 has not officially been announced by Samsung, it’s likely to be made soon. To prepare for it, we’ll share the expected specs, price, and launch date of The Samsung Galaxy Flip 6, including what we expect from the phone.

Not much has been heard about the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6, but according to Samsung themselves, they are working on a dust-proof foldable phone. While it isn’t been confirmed, there’s a high possibility that the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 will be that phone. Since the Galaxy Flip 5 already has a very high water resistance, adding dustproof to its list of specifications will be a step up.

According to some reports, the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 will have a 50MP camera. We are not sure which camera will get this upgrade, but there is a high probability that it will be the main camera since a 50MP sensor is currently being tested for it.

For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5 has a 12MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10MP selfie shooter. While the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 stands out with a 50MP sensor of its own, bumping any of the camera sensors on the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 to reach 50MP would make for a considerable upgrade.

There has also been some chatter about the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 having a cover screen of 3.9 inches, as opposed to the 3.4 inches of the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5. If true, this would also be a noticeable upgrade.

NAM SUMMIT: Delegates Already At Speke Resort Munyonyo For The Conference

0

As the country gears up to the exciting international summits this week and next week, many delegates have arrived in the country and are being taken first to where they will be sleeping there after they’re proceeding to the summit venue in Uganda’s capital Kampala under the theme The “Deepening Cooperation For Shared Global Affluence”

The country’s only international airport is experiencing huge incoming traffic as police advises those with outgoing flights to move earlier than planned as they’re several disruptions along the way due to diversions of traffic to allow the delegates move freely without any difficulty.

Several delegates have arrived at the Munyonyo Convention centre with over 40 presidents expected to grace the event. President Museveni is the host and will hold onto the NAM chairmanship until 2027 when the next host who will be announced in Kampala this week will take over.

NAM boasts of a whooping 120 membership  but with majority of countries from Africa, Asia, South America and Austria but with only two members from Europe including Azerbaijan where the 18th NAM summit took place from 25-26th October 2019.

According to Hon. John Mulimba, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, the summit will provide a unique opportunity for Uganda to be at the center of global affairs as well as support and promote the interests of developing countries.

“The vision for Uganda will be a stronger and united NAM that contributes to a better and stronger world for all,” Mulimba said.

Mulimba said the choice of the two themes was based on the fact that some issues had emerged worldwide, which require the engagement of group members.

Men Do These Two Things And a Woman Will Never Forget About You In Her Entire Life

0

In the world of Love, it’s matters of the heart, two people coming together to become one spiritually and emotionally. Women Love and if they decide to love, it’s the best gift of life  a man will ever get.

Now to you the men reading this, they’re things you should do and that woman will never forget about you for her entire life even when she goes to marry another man.

It’s therefore important to keep in mind that no two women are the same, and what works for one might not work for another. But for the most part, women tend to recall specific behaviors for a very long period.

The first thing a guy can do to leave a lasting impression in a woman’s life is to be emotionally present and attentive to her needs beyond the hair, make up, chips and chicken and not the 50k transport refund.

This means listening to what she has to say, showing empathy and understanding, and supporting her through both happy and sad moments.

Men who make an effort to comprehend women’s perspectives and offer support when needed are highly appreciated by them. A guy may establish a strong emotional bond with a woman if he is emotionally away of her and pays attention to her.

Being a man of his word is the second thing a man can do to leave a lasting impression into a woman’s life. In any relationship, honesty and dependability are essential and women appreciate a man who honors his commitments and keeps his word.

A guy can gain a woman’s trust and lay the ground work for an enduring relationship by being consistent in both his behavior and words.

In conclusion, two qualities that can leave a lasting impact on a lady are being emotionally aware and attentive as well as being a man of one’s word But keep in mind that every woman is different, their choices and preferences may vary. So what works for one woman might not work for the other.

See How You Can Avoid Vomiting While Traveling

0

Many times people normally vomit when they travel long distances. Some attribute it to the potholes that rub their hearts the wrong way while others attribute it to the smell of fuel in the car.

Much as some men feel the same, but its common among women who even move with buveras on standby such that when the worst comes to the worst, they would throw back in the kavera comfortably.

AD: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

Now in this article, we give you head ups on how to overcome vomiting while traveling because its something quite inconveniencing even to your fellow travelers, they feel bad but just keep quiet and don’t tell you.

Sit in front of a bus or car. Ask the driver to place you in the front seats since this would give you comfort and convenience. Also consider choosing a window seat if you’re traveling a long distance in a bus or taxi.

If possible, try lying down, shutting your eyes, sleeping, or looking at the horizon as this would settle well your heart without worry or fear.

Also eat small amounts of food, don’t just eat fwaa whatever is brought to your seat, having this situation calls for not over eating while on the road as this would also affect your urge in your system and may end up causing you to vomit.

Additionally, avoid smoking. Even stopping for a short period of tie really helps. You should also try distracting yourself with activities such as listening to music. Last but not least, get plenty of air through the windows and also consider consuming sweets that contain mint flavor.

NAM SUMMIT: How And When Uganda Joined The Movement

0

Uganda was admitted to the membership of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at the Second (II) Summit of Heads of State and Government, held on 5th – 10th October, 1964 in Cairo, Egypt. This was only three years since the founding of the Movement in Belgrade in 1961, and two years since Uganda attained her independence from the British, on 9th October, 1962. Uganda was one of the forty seven (47) Member States to attend the Summit.

Uganda’s decision to join NAM was inspired in great part by the Bandung Principles which the Movement stood for. These principles have served and continue to serve the movement and its membership well.

Since Uganda joined the Movement, it has been an active member, and will use its chairmanship of the Movement for the period 2023 – 2026 to further contribute to the aspirations of NAM. Uganda will pay attention to all issues on the NAM agenda, including those outlined in the Vision statement.

Over the last twenty-seven (27) years, the relevance of Uganda’s membership to NAM can be traced from “National Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy”, objective XXVIII, of the 1995 Constitution (as amended). Among other things, these principles provides for:

  • Respect for international law and treaty obligations;
  • Peaceful co-existence and non-alignment;
  • Settlement of international disputes by peaceful means; and
  • Opposition to all forms of domination, racism and other forms of oppression and exploitation.

They also provide that, Uganda shall actively participate in international and regional organizations that stand for peace, and for the well-being and progress of humanity.

These constitutional provisions are clearly in sync with, and speak to the Movement’s Bandung Principles.

NAM SUMMIT: What You Need To Know About The Movement

0

The Non-Aligned Movement has its origins from what has been referred to as the first large-scale Asian–African or Afro–Asian Conference, held on 18th– 24th April, 1955. It is popularly known as the Bandung Conference (taking on the name of the City where it was held – Bandung, Indonesia). The Conference was attended by delegations from twenty-nine (29) governments, mostly from Asia – owing to the fact that most of present-day African states were still under colonial control.

The Bandung Conference was convened to discuss peace and the role developing countries in the face of the raging cold war, as well as economic development and the decolonization of countries under colonial occupation. In other words, Bandung was convened out of a desire by the convening countries not to be involved in the East-West ideological confrontation of the Cold War, but rather to focus on national independence struggles and their economic development.

In 1961, drawing on the principles agreed at the Bandung Conference, the Non-Aligned Movement was formally established at the First (I) Summit held on 1st – 6th September, 1961 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The twenty-five (25) countries that attended the First Summit were: Afghanistan, Algeria, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Congo-Leopoldville (DRC), Cuba, Cyprus, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Lebanon, Mali, Morocco, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen and Yugoslavia.

Today, the work of NAM has been guided by the Bandung Principles – which caters mostly for the Movement’s political agenda. Over the years, however, economic cooperation and social and humanitarian issues have become central to the work of NAM.

Since has its founding, in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter, NAM has been instrumental in championing international peace and security. Its Members have been a strong voice in the calls for: nuclear disarmament and the establishment of nuclear free zones; condemning and fighting terrorism in all its forms and manifestations; and supporting United Nations’ efforts towards peacekeeping and peacebuilding. NAM also played a important role in leading international efforts  towards addressing the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic for a steady global recovery.

Unlike other regional and international organizations, such as the United Nations or the African Union, NAM neither has a formal founding Charter, Act or Treaty, nor a permanent secretariat. Coordinating and managing the affairs of the Movement, therefore, is the responsibility of the country holding the Chairmanship.
