BIG STORY: Trade Ministry PS Ssali Leverages NAM Moment To Tell Why Investors Have To Prioritize Uganda

0

The Trade Ministry Permanent Secretary Geraldine Ssali Busulwa was among those who delivered key note addresses at the Monday opening of the NAM Business Forum and Trade Exhibition in Kampala.

And the highly-travelled technocrat used the platform (that brought together potential investors from more than 100 countries) to highlight areas of potential effective investment in Uganda. She effectively used the opportunity to publicize areas into which investors can put money inside Uganda and instantly profit.

Ssali highlighted the different things that make Uganda tick as a lucrative investment destination. These include being home to a highly educated, energetic and employable youth population which accounts for 77% of Uganda’s 46m people.

She asserted that since other NAM countries must be having almost similar youth dividend, the NAM Youth Organisation should be leveraged upon to (through networking opportunities presented by technology advancements) deepen cooperation of the young people among the South-South countries and thereby harnessing employment creation.

That strategies like import substitution by way of accelerated industrialisation should be able to benefit from this abundant availability of these energetic and well schooled youths not just in Uganda but elsewhere under the NAM framework to which all African countries subscribe except one.

The Permanent Secretary also spoke about agriculture and the potential it has for those with big money seeking for where to profitably invest it. That, because it directly and indirectly employs 72% of Uganda’s 46m people and accounts for 24% of the country’s GDP, agriculture is one area with many effective investment opportunities.

Ssali explained that anyone can leverage the essentiality of this agricultural sector and successfully invest in the manufacturing of inputs (like improved seeds, fertilisers and pesticides) and predictably make good money within a very short time.

The other agriculture-related investment areas include logistics & cold storage facilities, farm machinery manufacturing & assembly, packaging and agro-processing equipment manufacturing. Gratefully, the availability of all these opportunities can easily be verified by anyone before making the decision to invest in what Ssali repeatedly and purposefully referred to as the Pearl of Africa.

The Permanent Secretary, whose Ministry is the GoU MDA with the last word on matters to do with trade and industry, also reflected on Uganda’s industrial potential and areas that can be capitalised upon for those seeking to invest. T

hat industry is one of the key high-impact sectors in the Ugandan economic intercourse: the other two being agriculture and services. The three’s respective contribution to Uganda’s GDP, as articulated to delegates by Ssali, is as follows: industry 27.4%, serviced 42% and agriculture 24.6%.

Because not less than 90% of the work under the three referenced sectors is currently being done by capital-constrained SMEs, Ssali told the audience at the NAM Business Forum and Trade Exhibition that there still remains a lot of potential for those with big money to come and roll off bankable projects whose possibilities are abundantly still very much available.

“This [SMEs dominating] provides low-hanging fruits for investment and the returns on investment in Uganda [in these three areas] are massive,” the PS elaborated.

Besides imploring loaded investors from Turkiye to consider investing in water transport on Lake Victoria as a matter of priority, Geraldine Ssali also made reference to the huge market for Ugandan coffee exports (among other products) that has lately become available in Morocco. This simply means that any investor coming to Uganda will invest in coffee production, processing and exportation and make quick and big money.

She also made reference to the opportunities that come from the effective and stable leadership Gen YK Museveni has offered for the last 38 years and continues to. She made reference to the deliberate effort towards regional integration as one of the things the Ugandan veteran leader has been very consistent about.

This consistency by President Museveni, Ssali explained, has ensured access to a huge market for Ugandan products and exports that has been made available under the EAC, COMESA and the African Continent Free Trade Area among others. The Ugandan government has equally been very deliberate when it comes to meeting its obligations imposed under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) arrangement and framework.

Still regionally, Ssali also spoke about the industry-related opportunities available at the regional level under the EAC framework. That the EAC regional GDP today stands at USD110bn of which only 9.7% is currently being contributed by industry-related activities.

This clearly means there is still huge potential to grow the contribution of the industry sector which is one of the many lucrative areas into which foreign investors coming to Uganda can safety and profitably put their money. She also revealed that industry-based employment in the region currently stands at mere 456,000 depicting great potential to do more.

All in all, EAC remains one part of the world with a lot of yet to be utilised potential provided that alternative and innovative investment financing options become well explored as opposed to continuing to rely on the international monetary and financial system that comes with unfavorable terms and conditions most of the time.

Geraldine Ssali also pointed out and illustrated how investors can make money by leveraging on the import substitution or replacement strategy which the GoU, under the able leadership of President Museveni, is continuing to undertake and be very deliberate about as part of the broader industrial development programme.

That as of 2022, Uganda lost lots of money through the following importation categories: pearls, precious stones and metals USD1.8m, petroleum & petroleum products USD977m, machinery & mechanical appliances USD596m, vehicles USD554m, electrical machinery & equipment USD405m, plastics USD385m, iron & steel USD360m, pharmaceutical products USD352m, cotton/textiles/apparels USD327m, animal/vegetable fats & oils USD289.8m and cereals USD264.5m.

All this hemorrhaging of the scarce foreign exchange (illustrated above) can be mitigated once loaded foreign investors come and invest here with the overall objective of making all these currently imported things locally available, Ssali elaborated.

The PS also made it clear that, just like China and India have done, there is a lot of trading-related progress that can be registered and accomplished once South-South countries do more while working towards diminishing tarrif-related barriers impeding trade among themselves. She also underscored the need to diversify agricultural production among South-South countries which also happen to be NAM members at the same time.

To drive the point home, Ssali made reference to the United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD) findings to the effect that even the full realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals among developing countries can be accelerated once South-South countries engage in effective trade among themselves.

The PS emphasized that this is indeed achievable because there is simply so much potential among these South-South countries whose combined trade volume stood at USD600m as of 1995 before spectacularly growing to USD5.3trn as of 2022.

She also explained how there is a lot more that can be derived from effective cooperation among these countries which currently (combined) receive only 1% of the global foreign direct investments.

Ssali explained that it’s through coming together and being very deliberate about the same that the rest of the world will come to accept these South-South countries’ economies as stable, credible and serious when it comes to growing their respective growth in the investment and industrialisation spheres.

She demanded that the two NAM and G77+China Summits should be used as an opportunity to deepen common understanding and strengthening of synergies to enable South-South countries to effectively confront challenges currently constraining effective trade and deployment of investment resources.

In the same address, Ssali also celebrated the fact that NAM had managed to exist for 63 years, a period during which it has been used as an effective platform to collectively strengthen and accelerate decolonisation, formation of new independent states and democratisation of diplomacy and foreing relations.

She also appreciated the fact that the narrative within the NAM framework has over the years evolved to concentrate on how to improve welfare of those countries’ citizens through investments and trade relations.

The Kampala (2024) NAM Business Forum & Trade Exhibition, at whose opening session PS Ssali spoke, is running under the theme: “Deeper Cooperation in Trade, Tourism & Investment for Shared Global Affluence.” This theming was aimed at depicting the fact that trade has always been a strong driving force for economic development and shared global affluence.

VIDEO: Besigye Plants Banana Suckers In a Major Road Ahead Of Thursday Planned Protests

0

Opposition on Tuesday rallied Ugandans to join them in exposing the state of bad roads in Kampala and else where in the country today Thursday. Many especially the regime sympathisers have lashed at opposition for hatching such an evil plan when the country is hosting two high level summits all winning Uganda some points at the global stage.

In their elaborate plan Opposition wants to use the NAM summit to expose what they say is bad rule, expose the state of infrastructure especially roads and also send a message to the NAM delegates that much as they’re cruising and being driven on swift roads, elsewhere in the city and country, things are not alright as roads are full of potholes.

Ahead of the showdown which government and police have already warned the opposition not to dare stage such protests in the city since it would paint a bad picture of the country especially that the visitors are here and would later visit other parts of the country for tourism and leisure.

Bobi Wine, Winnie Kiiza, Dr Kiiza Besigye among other leaders have continued rallying Ugandans to join the protests and should plant whatever they can in the potholes found on Kampala roads and elsewhere in the country.

To ignite the lines of dissatisfaction, Dr Kiiza Besigye has planted banana suckers in the road leading to the city in Kasangati town council in Wakiso district where he resides. According to Besigye, the road has several spots that have claimed people’s lives and vehicles continue causing accidents on the Jinja-Kayunga- Kampala road.

“WARM-UP for tomorrow’s “Road Works”! This is in my town of Kasangati, on Jinja-Kayunga-Kampala Rd, where many vehicles are being destroyed by deep potholes; accidents by Vehicles/ Motorcycles dodging these holes kill people;… We’ve marked the holes to alert oncoming traffic. Please do the same wherever you’re tomorrow- save lives!”-Besigye sa!d

National Unity Platform principal also in a video taken on a potholed road in the city posted on his social media handles has rallied Ugandans to join them on the streets to expose the mess on the potholed city roads.

Government through Deputy RCC Herbert Anderson Burora and police have since warned the opposition against staging protests in the city and they risk running battles with security if they dare step a foot on Kampala roads to protest against the bad roads.

Ssenfuma was handed to police and upon being interrogated and cross checked, he was found in possession of kiss condoms which he was going to use on the student. He had also moved with some Shs1000 as upkeep just incase.

Ssenfuma according to police is a resident of Mukono but traveled all the way to Kanyanya for his foiled mission. Besides being a teacher at Hillside College Mityana, John Kato Ssenfuma bakes cakes and is also an events MC.

DON’T DARE: Museveni RCC Warns Opposition Politicians Against Their Planned Thursday Protests

0

Yesterday while addressing journalists at their joint opposition press conference at plot 6 Katonga road in Kampala, the joint forces of change said they would carry an activity in the city tomorrow Thursday.

These indicated that they will be protesting in the city and else where in the country to plant banana, potatoes, trees in the potholes in the city roads and even in those in upcountry.

Winnie Kiiza the former Leader of opposition who represented her party president Gen Mugisha Muntu at the joint presser said that they would do this to expose the mess the country is in and also to show the visitors of the NAM summit that as they’re cruising on neat and smart roads, else where in the country, roads are full of potholes.

They also indicated that next Monday 22nd 2024, the joint forces of change will be in Iganga for joint prayers at Iganga Municipal Council primary school. From Iganga they will proceed to Lira at Mayor’s gardens for another session of Joint prayers on Tuesday 23nd January 2024.

However, in another turn of events, the Kampala Deputy RCC for Rubaga Division Anderson Burora has warned the opposition and their supporters not to dare step on the streets to cause mayhem on the potholed streets because the delegates attending the NAM summit are in the country and so their security matters a lot.

Speaking to journalists at the Uganda media centre, Burora said that security in the city is heightened to keep the NAM delegates safe and so there shouldn’t be any attempt to engage them in running battles with opposition supporters.

“The security has been mounted to ensure the heads of states and other visitors come and leave safe as they came shouldn’t be provoked to participate in now engaging with the people instead of focusing on crime, bad elements and most probably terrorists”- Burora said.

He also further faulted the Lord mayor of Kampala Erias Lukwago for participating and leading people into protests well knowing that the Kampala Capital City Authority is constructing both NAM roads and Multiyear roads under construction total to 116km in Kampala, this is all aimed at addressing the city infrastructure and Drainage Challenges.

We publish the RCC’s statement here verbatim.

On Thursday all participating heads of states in the #NAMSumitUg2024 #G77ChinaSummitUg24 will be in the country to participate in the ongoing conference, we therefore discourage people from participating in unfounded claims by a section of politicians who are unhappy with the summit.

The security has been mounted to ensure the heads of states and other visitors come and leave safe as they came shouldn’t be provoked to participate in now engaging with the people instead of focusing on crime, bad elements and most probably terrorists.

@GovUganda acknowledges the existing challenges. I also wonder why people think that it takes Pride in failing to address such challenges. Some roads that were exhibited 4months ago are already made, some under construction while others are pending. Govt works on budget and that is where the money to do all things are appropriated.

It is deceitful for the Lord Mayor to Ill-fully mislead the people well knowing that currently, KCCAUG is constructing Both NAM Roads, ADB and Multiyear roads under construction total to 116km in Kampala, this is all aimed at addressing the city infrastructure and Drainage Challenges. Of recent it has been raining and Key to note is that ever since the CLOCK TOWER was open, Floods have not surfaced again.

As a City, the Lord Mayor would be interested in creating avenues to make the city safer and clean than making it ungovernable.

It is also an ill intent for the politicians to think that everything that happens must be of a direct benefit to them.

Ukraine Says It Shot Down 2 Russian Command And Control Aircraft

0

The Ukrainian air force shot down a Russian Beriev A-50 early warning and control plane and an IL-22 command center aircraft in a significant blow for the Kremlin’s forces, Ukraine’s military chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi claimed Monday.

The planes are key tools in helping orchestrate Russian battlefield movements. Shooting them down is a landmark feat for Ukraine in the almost two-year war, as fighting along the front line is largely bogged down in trench and artillery warfare.

Zaluzhnyi did not say how the aircraft were brought down, but Ukraine has received sophisticated modern air defense systems from its Western allies.

He also did not say where the interception occurred, though he attached a video to his social media post with an airplane tracker showing two targets disappearing above the Azov Sea, which lies between Ukraine and Russia, north of the Crimea Pensinsula and the Black Sea.

There was no immediate official comment from Moscow. Russian war bloggers said both planes had come under friendly fire, though they presented no evidence of that. They claimed the Il-22 was damaged but made a successful landing.

The A-50 is an early warning and control aircraft with a large radar capable of spotting air targets at distances of up to 650 kilometers (400 miles). It has a crew of 15. The Russian air force reportedly has been operating a fleet of nine such aircraft.

An A-50 was damaged by a February 2023 drone attack at an airfield in Belarus where it was parked, but Russian and Belarusian officials said it sustained only minor damage.

The Il-22 is an airborne command post, intended to oversee military operations and relay radio signal to troops on the front line. The Russian air force reportedly has a dozen such planes.

Men Do These Two Things And a Woman Will Never Forget About You In Her Entire Life

0

In the world of Love, it’s matters of the heart, two people coming together to become one spiritually and emotionally. Women Love and if they decide to love, it’s the best gift of life  a man will ever get.

Now to you the men reading this, they’re things you should do and that woman will never forget about you for her entire life even when she goes to marry another man.

It’s therefore important to keep in mind that no two women are the same, and what works for one might not work for another. But for the most part, women tend to recall specific behaviors for a very long period.

The first thing a guy can do to leave a lasting impression in a woman’s life is to be emotionally present and attentive to her needs beyond the hair, make up, chips and chicken and not the 50k transport refund.

This means listening to what she has to say, showing empathy and understanding, and supporting her through both happy and sad moments.

Men who make an effort to comprehend women’s perspectives and offer support when needed are highly appreciated by them. A guy may establish a strong emotional bond with a woman if he is emotionally away of her and pays attention to her.

Being a man of his word is the second thing a man can do to leave a lasting impression into a woman’s life. In any relationship, honesty and dependability are essential and women appreciate a man who honors his commitments and keeps his word.

A guy can gain a woman’s trust and lay the ground work for an enduring relationship by being consistent in both his behavior and words.

In conclusion, two qualities that can leave a lasting impact on a lady are being emotionally aware and attentive as well as being a man of one’s word But keep in mind that every woman is different, their choices and preferences may vary. So what works for one woman might not work for the other.

DEAR EDITOR: Ugandans Ought To Be Grateful Of The NAM summit

0

Dear Ultimate Editor,

Ugandans regardless of political affiliation need to be grateful that the NAM meeting of all these nations is here in Uganda.

It’s absurd to hear other Ugandans want to cause trouble and commotion in the city. They’re things which fellow Ugandans should agree upon that the NRM government has tried so much to work for this country.
Those who hate the president hate him because of his being lenient, fatherly and so democratic. Too much of anything becomes dangerous so the freedom of speech and association has resulted into some Ugandans turning into being enemies of their nation and have become agents of foreigners because of financial reasons.
Some of us grew up during Obote 1, Idi Amin dada, Professor Kironde Lule government of 68 days, QC Lukongwa Binaisa and then Obote 2 and General Tito Okello Lutwa and Baziriyo Olala Junta.
During the eras and reign of the mentioned governments, Uganda was like an abuse around the world and it used to be said especially during Idi Amin era that God forgot Uganda and the Ugandan file wasn’t even available in heaven!
Now Museveni has restored the dignity and integrity of Uganda some friends think are better leaders than him. It’s time fellow Ugandans we discern those who want to bring chaos again.
Democracy takes long to mature and western countries wo want us to change government every five years started longtime ago to have what they have today. They struggled and fought for many years to achieve what they enjoy today just as Uganda nearly spent 40 or 50 yrs fighting and killing and deposing each other until NRM came in 1986.
I pray politicians from the opposition do what Mao leader of DP and Akena leader of UPC have done to work with NRM for peace, development and prosperity.
God Bless The Readers.

0

In the news this afternoon, Naira has been nabbed and exposed after two years of impersonating to be a woman.

Real names, Nsamba Ashraf, the gentleman has been impersonating a woman calling himself Naira but his forty days just ran out and he has been exposed.

AD: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

According to Rubaga Division RCC Anderson Burora, the man has been going around in people’s homes doing loundry work and domestic work while pretending to be a woman.

Its however not clear if Nsamba was caught committing a crime because no law prohibits him from wearing whatever they want. It’s only illegal when they’re using it to extort money from men.

Ashraf is not the first Ugandan man nabbed wearing women’s attire to impersonate as a woman, several have been nabbed over the years.
